Job description

KPMG is a global organization of independent professional services firms providing Audit, Tax and Advisory services. We operate in 144 countries and have more than 230,000 people working in member firms around the world.

KPMG International is the entity with which all member firms of the KPMG network of independent member firms are affiliated. it acts as a coordinating entity, carrying out certain business activities for the benefit of KPMG firms. More than 2,500 colleagues make up the KPMG International team, with a focus on ensuring global consistency and providing expertise to support member firms in the achievement of KPMG’s Trust and Growth ambition. KPMG International is comprised of a number of global teams, including: Global Advisory, Global Audit, Global Clients & Markets, Global Corporate Affairs, Global People, Global Quality and Risk Management, Global Tax & Legal, Global Technology and Knowledge, the International Office of General Counsel, and the Office of Chief Administrative Officer. Working together, our global team is changing the way our business operates, delivering value to our member firms and driving positive change in the communities we serve.

This is an outstanding opportunity to work within a large and expanding legal team of excellent calibre. The International Office of General Counsel ("IOGC") is a team based in four countries. The team provides legal advice on key strategic issues for and supports the execution of key business decisions made by KPMG International. It also supports KPMG International and the KPMG global network in dealing with legal, regulatory and reputational issues and risks. The role will also involve working closely with the Global Insurance Management Team (“GIMT”) within KPMG International. The GIMT is responsible for the management, oversight and coordination of KPMG's Global Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) and Global First Party Cyber Insurance Programs. The GIMT acts as a principal point of contact between insurers/brokers and KPMG Member Firms, providing guidance to KPMG Member Firms on matters pertaining to the Global PII and Cyber insurance programs.

The role will be well suited to someone with a strong interest in insurance work but who is keen to maintain a broader mix of work and experience at a relatively junior stage of their career. It will be focussed on insurance while providing an opportunity for involvement in the wider corporate and commercial work undertaken within IOGC (a balance of approximately 60% insurance work and 40% general corporate and commercial work is anticipated). The insurance aspects will involve providing legal support in respect of the renewal of KPMG's global cyber security insurance program, KPMG's professional indemnity insurance program and also certain D&O insurance programs. The individual will work predominantly under the supervision of a Director in IOGC who is a specialist insurance lawyer. Some international travel may be required for this role but it will not usually be at short notice.

We are looking for a qualified lawyer with approximately 2-3 years PQE (or equivalent if not England and Wales qualified) although all candidates who demonstrate an ability to fulfil the role will be actively considered. A successful candidate is likely to have or to be able to demonstrate: (i) legal experience of advising on corporate transactions (having as a minimum requirement completed a corporate seat during their training contract); (ii) some experience of insurance focused work and/or the insurance sector would be advantageous including, for example, advising on insurance arrangements in the context of corporate due diligence, and/or advising on the interpretation of insurance policies; (iii) experience of legal issues pertaining to cyber risk and/or data privacy would be advantageous but is not essential; and (iv) legal experience of working on complex commercial matters involving multiple different jurisdictions.

A successful candidate is likely to have or to be able to demonstrate: (i) excellent technical legal skills (particularly in areas of contract law and company law); (ii) an understanding of the business drivers affecting, and legal and regulatory risk faced by large global organisations; (iii) awareness of own strengths and areas for development; (iv) ability to work collaboratively and flexibly as part of a supportive team while taking responsibility for own work; (v) excellent attention to detail with a strong focus on delivering outputs to the highest quality standards; (vi) excellent communication skills - both written and verbal; (vii) ability to prioritise conflicting demands; (viii) ability to engage in effective and collaborative communication with internal and external stakeholders such as insurers and brokers; (ix) ability to engage and deal with individuals across different functions, geographies and at all levels within the organisation; (x) fluency in English; additional language skills are an advantage but are not essential.
