The Department of Natural Sciences is a large and successful academic unit in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. We work with research institutions, industry partners, national organisations and NGOs worldwide, to deliver solutions that address challenges posed in environmental change and sustainability, socio-economic, cultural and political change, health and advanced materials.
We have a reputation for exceptional research impact at a regional, national and international level and are committed to achieving high-quality teaching, research, and enterprise. The Department is arranged into several academic clusters comprised of Geographers, Biologists, Chemists and Environmental Scientists responsible for developing and delivering their relevant subject areas and courses.
We deliver courses to over 1500 students across Undergraduate, and Postgraduate programmes including BSc Geography and BSc Human Geography. Our human geographers are world leaders in research focusing on cities, space, culture and identity and we are seeking to grow this dynamic teaching and research community.
The Role:
We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and dedicated individual who is committed to providing an excellent learning experience for our students and enhancing our research reputation. We seek applications from individuals with expertise in the field of human geography, specialising in urban geography. This position aligns strongly with internal priorities, contributing to our Road to 2030 goal to provide leadership to tackle the most pressing issues facing modern society including urban regeneration and economic development alongside intersectional inequalities and social trends.
You will teach on undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the Department, including Foundation Year Geography, BSc (Hons) Geography and BSc (Hons) Human Geography, using pedagogic approaches that deliver a first-class student experience. You will be expected to contribute flexibly to teaching and conduct research or knowledge exchange, with the successful candidate having a research profile that aligns to an appropriate research theme within the Research Centre for Applied Social Sciences (RCASS).
You will:
- have a PhD in Human Geography or a related discipline.
- be able to teach and provide academic leadership on our Geography and Human Geography programmes and contribute to the ongoing development of these subject areas.
- have experience of teaching in a higher education setting, and experience of Unit/Module Leadership (unit/module design, unit/module management, assessment, quality assurance) is desirable.
- be student-focused in your academic practice, committed to quality, collaborative in your work and driven in your own professional development.
- be able to undertake research in the field of urban geography and have a strong track record/pipeline of high-quality papers.
