About the School of Business and Management and the Department of People and Organisations

The School of Business and Management (SBM) is one of the eight schools in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The School has been undergoing a period of rapid growth, almost doubling our number of academic staff over the last five years and set to grow even further. We presently have 121 permanent academic staff and a large team of Teaching Fellows and TAs. We have over 2,000 undergraduate business studies students and, at the post-graduate level, approximately 1,000 MSc students and a well-established doctoral programme of around 80 students.

SBM’s core purpose is to promote social justice, sustainability and good governance in the management of private, public and voluntary organisations through our research and education. We are a distinctive School that takes a humanities and social science-led approach to our scholarship and are now the largest school within QMUL’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, with its traditional strengths as a site of critical thinking in the humanities, law, history, geography and politics.

Our core values are social justice and inclusivity. We aim to lead in both education and research in multi-disciplinary fields pertaining to organisational behaviour, human resource management, organisation studies and employment relations. Departmental colleagues are committed to collective excellence in teaching and research. The Department and the wider School offer a supportive and friendly environment. Our international academic staff bring research expertise and sound practical knowledge to their teaching and our research units are focused on public engagement and having a real-world impact. We have a diverse international student population as well as strong engagement with our community through our local students. Many of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and we aim to offer them a transformational student experience and engage them in current issues. We wish to promote in our practice and teaching the values of social justice, equality, diversity and inclusion and wellbeing. We explore the interaction between people and organisations in a world that is rapidly changing and facing new challenges around managing equality and diversity, intersectionality, leadership, learning and innovation as well as the challenges to individuals’ personal and professional development in diverse business and management contexts. We do so by drawing on a range of research methods and pedagogical approaches.
