The Department of Economics and Finance is a significant part of the College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences. The Department is home to more than 50 full-time academics, with research interests spanning Accountancy, Banking, Economics and Finance, over 1300 undergraduate students across seven degree programmes, and over 300 postgraduate students following four taught programmes or undertaking doctoral research. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 61% of the Department’s research output was rated as World Leading or Internationally Excellent by the Economics and Econometrics panel.
The Department of Economics and Finance is continuing its ambitious recruitment drive to significantly boost the quality of its research activity, and has recently made two Professorial and seven Lecturer level appointments. We are now recruiting to three more Professorial level posts and up to four more Lecturer level posts, in preparation for academic year 2023/24. Further recruitment at similar levels is also expected during 2023/24.
Applicants are welcome from any area of Finance. They should normally hold a PhD in Finance, or be nearing completion. An appropriate professional qualification in Finance is also highly desirable, in particular either of the CFA or the CISI. The candidate must have the potential to publish or proven experience of publishing in world leading or the more selective internationally excellent research journals, along with high quality teaching skills. To support research activity, the appointed candidate can expect a reduced teaching allocation alongside funding for conference activity and other direct research costs.
The Department is a co-convenor of the Research Centre in Law, Economics and Finance, and has finance academics in the research groups in Empirical Finance and in Finance and Accounting. There is excellent computer support and data facilities, including from providers such as Bloomberg, Fitch and Refinitiv (Eikon/Datastream). While an interest in teaching in any area of Finance is welcome, candidates interested in teaching risk management or developing teaching in the area of Fintech, Digital Banking, or both, would also be most welcome to apply. Prospective candidates must be capable of supervising empirical MSc dissertations, and be prepared to take on some administration such as leading a module, directing a degree programme for the department, or co-ordinating co-curriculum events to enhance student experience.
