Overview of project/role

The Adult and Family Learning Team deliver a busy programme of events for adult, families and general audiences both at the Museum in Covent Garden, the Museum Depot in Acton and off-site across the TfL network with heritage vehicles. The post holder will work alongside a dynamic team of Learning staff which encompasses the Young People's Skills & Community Team and the Schools Team.

The Learning Officer; Heritage Events, is sought to develop and deliver a programme of events for varied audiences, taking responsibility for activities and event streams within the wider Museum Learning programme throughout the year at both the Museum in Covent Garden, our Museum Depot in Acton and off site. The post holder will be accountable for embedding best practice in museum education and will give training and support to a team of freelancers and volunteers who help deliver the programme.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop and manage, efficiently and to budget, creative, impact-focused public events and activities that best enable the Museum to reach out to new and existing audiences, generate commercial return and enhance our reputation as a vibrant cultural venue.
  • Manage freelancers, young freelancers and volunteers to deliver the programme as needed. Report and celebrate the progress of the programme.
  • Build strong relationships across our two sites in Covent Garden and the Museum Depot in Acton with a diverse group of stakeholders including schools, community organisations, other LTM departments, funders and Transport for London.
  • Build positive working relationships with external partners with an emphasis on creating a relevant, high-quality experience for audiences.
  • Ensure that audiences have a range of opportunities to be involved with LTM and that all work seeks to build lifelong relationships and future visitors.
  • Work closely with key internal stakeholders – particularly Marketing, Volunteering, Curatorial, Operations and Visitor Services teams – to market and coordinate the programmes and ensure they are visible, valued and integrated with the wider work of the Museum.
  • Fully and consistently evaluate and measure impact of the family programme to inform its on-going development.

Skills

  • Ability to successfully articulate, plan and deliver a coherent programme of varied projects’ (Essential)
  • Strong organisational skills: a proven ability to work on own initiative and in a team, to prioritise and manage own time and that of others to meet deadlines. (Essential)
  • Effective interpersonal skills to engage and work with a range of stakeholders in a clear and confident manner. (Essential)
  • Exceptional ability to build personal and organisational relationships at all levels. (Essential)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills: the ability to effectively represent the Museum through formal presentations, one-to-one meetings, written proposals, reports and promotional copy writing. (Essential)
  • Demonstrable flexibility in approach to work; able to adjust plans as necessary to meet overall ambitions of the Learning team and the Museum. (Essential)
  • Computer skills (MS Office Suite and other) will be needed to take advantage of the Museum’s Information technology. (Essential)

Knowledge

  • A basic knowledge of event management process. (Essential)
  • Proven knowledge of learning and public engagement best practice in the cultural sector (Essential)
  • Proven knowledge of working with a range of audiences including those with learning difficulties (Essential)
  • Proven knowledge of the requirements of delivering and evaluating successful projects (Essential)
  • Computer literate with experience in the use of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint (Essential)
  • Good working knowledge of Transport for London’s services and the history of public transport in London or demonstrably prepared to acquire this (Desirable)

Experience

  • Event coordination experience. (Essential)
  • Experience of working in the heritage, museum and/ or cultural sector. (Essential)
  • Experience of successfully managing, recruiting and training people, particularly freelancers and volunteers (Essential)
  • Experience of successful working in diverse teams (Desirable)
