Broomfield Hospital Pharmacy Department is currently looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic and forward-thinking Lead Dispensary Technician to join their busy department.

The post holder will assist in the provision of Pharmacy Services to all wards and departments within the Trust, and any external Trusts where appropriate.

Based in the busy town of Chelmsford, Mid Essex Hospital is part of Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust and the pharmacy department now has around 300 staff working across 3 sites.

Although only recently merged, the pharmacy departments across the three sites have been working together under one Chief Pharmacist for a number of years. During this time we have developed standardised systems and re-designed new and on-going services supporting the wider organisation’s clinical configuration changes

This is a lead technician post within the dispensary services working as part of the Dispensary team to provide an effective Pharmacy service in both the in-patient dispensary and out-patient dispensary providing a customer focused service. They will ensure the safe and effective management, co-ordination and delivery of the dispensary services at Broomfield Hospital

The post holder will already hold a Regional Checking Accreditation (ACT) and have experience in a hospital environment supervising various grades of staff.

  • To supply medication to in-patients and out-patients within the Trust and external Trusts.
  • To assist and supervise in the training of junior members of staff.
  • To recruit and line manage staff at various grades.
  • To carry out yearly performance reviews and regular one to ones with staff.
  • Work independently but under the supervision of the Deputy Operational lead Technician.
  • To ensure weekly rotas are undertaken.
  • Ensure all daily tasks are carried out and completed each day.
  • Liaising with other professionals including nurses to provide a quality service.
  • Review and update departmental policies and procedures when required.
  • Ensure that all work is carried out in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain competencies working within the dispensary.
  • To dispense medicines for in-patients, either at ward level or in the dispensary using the WellSky computer system.
  • Accuracy check medicines for inpatients, outpatients and stock of controlled drugs.
  • To undertake the dispensing of Controlled Drugs for Inpatients, Outpatients and stock supply.
  • Hand out completed prescriptions with appropriate counselling, under the supervision of the Pharmacist in charge.
  • Maintain Controlled drug register, make entries into the register, stock check and reconcile stock using the Omnicell CD cabinet.
  • To participate in patient counselling and provide information on medicines to patients, doctors and other healthcare staff.
  • Answer telephone enquiries from staff and patients, resolve or refer as necessary.
  • Ensure the to-follow and repeat prescriptions are dispensed and accurately maintained.
  • To contribute to efficient computer stock control and ordering in all areas and to ensure that stock rotation procedures are followed, expired medicines are identified, and pharmaceutical items returned to the department are dealt with according to procedures at all times
  • Ensure professional and legal standards are adhered to.
  • Ensure that Continuing Professional Development (CPD) records are maintained.
