Overview of Role

The Lead Industrial Design Engineer will take a senior role within Synaptec’s product engineering division, and will lead significant parts of the development cycle of Synaptec’s novel sensing technologies. The Engineer will be capable of design, simulation, and prototyping of new measurement hardware, the development of calibration and product testing regimes, and the qualification and launch of new commercial products.

The role is focussed on development, ruggedisation and standards compliance of novel instrumentation and measurement techniques for the power and energy industries, utilising both electronic and photonic technologies. The Engineer will be responsible for industrialised electrical and mechanical design of sensor and interrogation system products. Prior experience and confidence in an electrical and mechanical prototyping and design house or laboratory environment will be important.

The post will report on a day-to-day basis to the company’s Head of Sensor Technologies, and will be expected to provide mentorship and leadership to junior team members, updates to the wider team on progress, and detailed reporting on work or investigations undertaken.

This is a full-time post based at the Company’s facilities in central Glasgow. Site visits or short-term working at client or supplier sites are likely to be required.

Essential criteria

The candidate will be able to demonstrate or rapidly develop:

  • An excellent postgraduate qualification in electrical, electronic, or mechatronic engineering or equivalent field
  • A strong desire to take a lead role in a growing team and engage in driving the commercial success of new technology
  • PhD and/or industrial experience with design of electronic systems
  • Experience with electronic prototyping, covering both analogue and digital electronics
  • Experience with mechanical prototyping, including CAD design and specification of componentry
  • Experience in all aspects of hardware product development: specification, prototyping, testing, and qualification
  • Familiarity with electronic/power/photonic product packaging and prototyping
  • C, Matlab fluency for sensor simulation, testing and data analysis
  • Self-motivation and an ability to work autonomously, including the ability to manage own time and workload effectively
  • Confidence with team-working in a high-technology environment and mentoring of junior members of the technical team
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and attitude, with an ability to discuss technical information in clear and simple terms with colleagues and customers
  • Ability to prepare concise, accurate, high-quality documents and presentations, with excellent attention to detail

Differentiating criteria

  • Qualification in mechanical engineering
  • Familiarity with high voltage or power engineering
  • Familiarity with fibre optic components
  • Excellent experimental design, execution and evaluation skills
  • Capability in FEM analysis; electrical, electromagnetic, stress-strain and thermal modelling and analysis
