Land Use & Farming Adviser Exeter, England

National Trust
Full Time Exeter, England 43440 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

We are looking for two Land Use and Farming Advisors for the National Trust in the Southwest. You'll be joining a highly experienced, skilled, and passionate team of Nature and Land Specialist Consultants, and Property Teams who work directly with our tenant farmers. Your input will directly help to make significant changes for Nature, People and Climate through our future farming and land use practices.

Permanent role to support: Kingston Lacy, Purbeck, Brownsea, West and North Dorset, West and North Dorset, Somerset (South, Coast and Countryside), Dunster, North Devon and Knightshayes. Based out of either Killerton or Bristiol Hub

What it's like to work here:Land and landscapes are facing unprecedented threats; the loss of nature and the changing climate are the biggest risks facing land locally and globally. Through your work you will play a key and active role in exploring ways to make all the land we look after healthier and more resilient. You'll be part of the team to help tailor solutions to each place, often working with farmers to put nature at the heart of managing our land. This helps to protect water and soil, capture carbon, create bigger wildlife habitats and provide public access, while making sure farmers can run thriving businesses and produce high quality food. As a Land Use and Farming Advisor your role is critical for this.

What you'll be doing:You'll be working to assist the accelerated delivery of landscapes with abundant nature, resilient to climate change, rich in history, and which are accessible and relevant to more people. You will draw on your broad knowledge of systems for example regenerative, organic and other forms of nature and climate friendly agriculture, agro-forestry, conservation grazing management, and large-scale habitat restoration and management.

You'll be confident advising on stock and grazing animal management/welfare (in hand or tenanted), ensuring infrastructure is appropriate to the farming and land management system, approaches to climate mitigation and adaptation (e.g., lowering emissions, achieving greater carbon sequestration and resilience in land), and integrating nature within arable and livestock systems. Whilst supporting places who are making significant changes will be a priority in the role, providing general agricultural /livestock/agri-environment and regulatory compliance advice to teams, will also take up a considerable proportion of your work time.

Who we're looking forYou'll need to have an in depth understanding and experience of working with people to achieve nature and climate friendly farming and land management, and compliance with environmental and agricultural regulation,
  • Excellent engagement skills, and a readiness for challenging conversations.
  • Experience explaining current farming issues and opportunities, to a farming audience.
  • Significant practical knowledge of farming and other land management systems.
  • Experience advising on agricultural waste regulations infrastructure.
  • Detailed understanding of farm businesses and experience of options appraisals.
  • Practical understanding of the principles of regenerative agriculture, soil management and farm carbon management.
  • Experience helping with Agri-environment scheme design and application.

You'll be providing high-quality service and advice to a broad brush of clients across the Southwest within the National Trust, as well as building close working relationships with neighbouring Landowners and Partners. The response to the nature crisis is much bigger than just the NT and working with others beyond our boundaries is a critical part of the job.
