About Mission Zero Technologies (MZT):
MZT is an early-stage start-up pioneering a breakthrough Direct Air carbon Capture (DAC) technology that can scrub CO2 from the air using off-the-self, modular technologies. In the past two and a half years, MZT has evolved its technology from concept to pilot plant scale, successfully raising over £8m from a mixture of private and government funding. MZT's technology is a hybrid of approaches, combining efficient solution-phase capture of CO2 with a continuous and compact electrochemical separation technology.
Mission Zero and its work is guided by its principles of bold curiosity, problem-solving acumen and hope for the future. We strive to realise a world where humanity has new tools to fight climate change, remove CO2 permanently from the atmosphere and produce everyday products such as concrete blocks or fuels from atmospheric carbon emissions. To do this we need to realise a decentralised Gt supply chain for CO2 sourced directly from the atmosphere.
The opportunity:
You have the opportunity to join MZT at a pivotal point in our company's history - our transition from an early-stage R&D startup into a product offering, revenue-generating company poised to rapidly scale our direct-air capture technology across the world. You will work closely with the Laboratory Manager and other scientists and engineers in the Technology Team to carry out key operations and support the execution of Mission Zero's technology development. This will be a broad role, ranging from running well defined experiments, analysing samples, maintaining the standards in the lab facilities, maintaining stocks of consumables and taking care of analytical & functional equipment.
What you'll be responsible for:
- Performing analytical test-protocols using standard operating procedures (eg. ion-chromatography, titrations, solvent tests, electrochemical experiments)
- Reporting of analytical results to Technology Team
- Ensuring the calibration of equipment (pH, conductivity meters, CO2 sensors, flow sensors, gas and ion chromatography, mass balances etc)
- Stock-checking and maintaining the inventories of our consumables via purchasing from suppliers (eg. Sigma Aldrich, BOC, RS components)
- Maintenance of equipment (pumps, tubing etc.)
The Ideal Candidate will possess:
- HND/HNC or BSc/BEng or higher in a scientific or engineering discipline
- Able to work safely within the frameworks of risk assessments and COSHH assessments
- Previous experience working in laboratory environments
- Competent IT user who can flexibly adapt to new software environments
- A can-do attitude to work
- Fast-learning
- Happy to work in a dynamic and changing environment
- Practically and technically minded
- Enjoys hand-on work
- A desire for continuous improvement
Also desirable:
- A sense of humour
- Able to find meaning and purpose in supporting Mission Zero's objectives
- Climate oriented
- Solution-orientated (not problem orientated)
- An understanding of sensors/probes and how they function from an electronic, communication and logging perspective
- Experience troubleshooting PLCs & control hardware/software
- Working knowledge of pumps, fans and process instruments
- Experience with a range of fittings for plumbing and tubing
- Interest and experience with projects involving 3D printing, automation, hobby electronics, programming
- Experience with electrochemistry techniques and applications
