Department Information
The departments of Histology and Necropsy under the umbrella of Post Life Services offer a great opportunity for those specialising in more hands-on tasks. The departments have several apprentices working at both Level 3, 5 and 6, creating a supportive environment mixing both college studies and laboratory based work. A level of dexterity and manual skill is needed to complete the intricate dissections of organs and tissues from multiple animal species in Necropsy. Organ weights and visual descriptions recorded on computer systems create data points for further analysis. Tissue is then further processed with the use of manual and automated processes, such as tissue trimming, processing, embedding, section cutting, staining and quality control, within Histology to create a stained tissue slide to highlight key cellular structures for pathological analysis. Specialised staining may also be performed to aid pathology diagnosis performed by Pathologists.
Large diverse teams work dynamically throughout the week in a fast paced laboratory setting, with an emphasis on team work, flexibility and adaptability. High efficiency and productivity is developed and maintained through training and constructive feedback and this is balanced with a high level of quality in all aspects of the role.
Training is on the job, with a dedicated training program offering both one on one sessions and larger groups in order to develop key manual and scientific skills. Our aim during the 2-year programme is to produce confident competent scientific technicians with the core skills to allow them to develop a career within the company. We then offer the option to progress to both a Level 5 or Level 6 Degree qualification or beyond to a Masters Qualification.
