Jackson Hogg is delighted to be supporting a well-known Chemical company based in Sunderland in the appointment of a Laboratory Chemist. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate who is looking to start their career in the chemical industry or someone with some experience in chemical analysis and quality control.
The Laboratory chemist will possess a comprehensive range of analytical knowledge and laboratory equipment experience, ideally with suitable chemistry qualifications to provide effective support and control over equipment and test methods. Experience and knowledge gained working within a quality assurance background including corresponding environmental, health and safety legislative requirements is beneficial to this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Compliance with Health and Safety Regulations.
- Compliance with all relevant Quality Assurance and Environmental Procedures.
- Promote a positive health and safety culture by maintaining audit ready sites through sustaining good housekeeping standards, wearing correct PPE, reporting any observed near misses and isolating any unsafe situations.
- To work in a safe, standardised and efficient manner to perform all the required analysis and to operate equipment as per test methods and quality requirements.
- Perform the required analysis to acceptable standards for all material entering onto and leaving site and to suitably support production analysis requirements, recording all data into SAP and raising any deviations within the non-conformance system.
- Work with the laboratory manager and equipment suppliers to ensure that any breakdowns, improvements or repairs are performed to the appropriate standard and timescales.
- To undertake all the job specific training requirements and complete appropriate training records as per the requirements from the training requirements matrix.
- All waste generated within the laboratory is managed efficiently in line with current legislation and good practise.
- Ensure that all equipment defects / alarms are reported to the laboratory manager and that any issues are appropriately handled ensuring all unsafe items are suitably isolated and communicated.
- Ensure change management (MOC) is followed and used to control equipment and procedural changes.
- Actively participate in performance reviews raising any training issues or development potential within personnel development plans.
- Provide shift chemist cover for all environmental, legislative and personnel monitoring analysis performed. This must include that effective communication is being used to report any non-conformances and or approaches to warning limits.
- Perform analysis as required for investigations to customer complaints, incidents or accidents and follow up with appropriate actions to prevent reoccurrences.
- To provide back-up production administration function for the production department. Duties include raising and issuing SAP production orders to control vehicle movements to and from site and liaising with haulier drivers.
- To manage the issuance and control the stocks of Hazchem labels issued to vehicles leavings site.
- Utilise Continuous Improvement (CI) opportunities to improve methods and equipment operation by personnel contributions and through regular review of system and performance data.
- Assist Laboratory Manager in all aspects of their work including covering the other technician’s holidays/absence as required.

Salary: £22,000.00-£23,000.00 per year
