A great opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join as a Laboratory Technician at the University of Surrey. This is a superb entry-level role, particularly for those who are recently graduated with a Biology or Science-based degree.

You’ll be working within the University’s Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, a recognised world-leader in Biosciences with more than 4000 students in a variety of teaching environments.

We value, empower and support every member of staff to get the best out of your unique talents, so you’ll be rewarded with a generous salary, 32 days holiday PLUS Bank Holidays, pension contribution up to 12%, and a unique and vibrant working environment.

Role & Responsibilities

You’ll work helping to prepare and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate practical classes in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Physiology and more.

Primarily, you’ll provide technical support to the teaching laboratories in the Engineering for Health building, providing general support to Undergraduate Students during practical lab classes, ensuring a positive student experience. Other responsibilities include:

  • Provide preparation and support throughout undergraduate and postgraduate taught practical classes, working with senior technicians to ensure classes are appropriately serviced and that equipment is operating correctly.
  • Assist in the day-to-day support of teaching within the laboratory.
  • Oversee the safe operation of key equipment and processes within the building.
  • Ensure efficient turnaround of reusable materials and disposal of waste following practical classes.
  • Monitor and maintain a safe working environment in accordance with Health and Safety procedures such as electrical safety testing, COSHH and disposal of waste.
  • Participate in demonstrations/workshops for visitors as part of Open Days, Applicant Days, Widening Participation and other events.

Full training and ongoing support is provided, so experience is not necessary. However, if you’ve worked in a practical teaching environment, have an understanding of laboratory Health & Safety and a methodical approach to work, then this post may be particularly suited to you.

The role may require a significant amount of manual handling and an ability to adapt to changes in the workload at peak times. You must be able to work independently and have good time management skills.
