We're recruiting a Kennel / Cattery Supervisor to join us at our Great AytonAnimal Centre in Great Ayton, Middlesbrough on apermanent basis to provide care for all animals in the centre, establish good customer relations and maintain administration and health and safety procedures. Please note this role is predominantly a Kennel Supervisor role but there will be some supervisory responsibilities for the Cattery also.
The post holder will be responsible for the allocation and conduct of work within the kennels including supervision and practical training of Animal Care Assistants and volunteers allocated to the facility. The post holder will also be required to assist the Manager and Deputy Manager in the provision of 24 hour cover at the Animal Centre and to stand in for the Deputy Manager as required.
At Great Ayton we care for the animals in the greatest of need that have been identified by our uniformed Inspectors. At any one time we could be caring for over 150 animals including dogs, cats, rabbits, other small furries and farm animals.
We have a team of twenty dedicated staff and an army of volunteers who assist us with day to day care of the animals and their accommodation.
Our vision is a society where no animal suffers unnecessarily. Some animals that come to us have been mistreated, kept in awful conditions or left without free access to food or water. They may arrive terrified and it's up to us to try and work out why and bring them round to trusting people again. We do this on a daily basis with a dedicated team that we're extremely proud of.
Here's some of the key work that you will be doing...
- Day to day supervision of Animal Care Assistants (ACAs) and volunteers including the allocation of duties, coaching, training and support to staff and volunteers within the facility. To monitor ACA's and where requested provide performance feedback to centre management;
- Ensuring all health and safety measures and procedures are observed and adhered to by staff, volunteers and the general public within the facility, reporting any accidents or incidents promptly and correctly in accordance with the Centre procedures;
- Co-operation with the consulting veterinary surgeon in respect of the examination and treatment of animals including ensuring that treatments and medications are administered in the prescribed quantity at the specified intervals;
- Non veterinary health assessment, in collaboration with other staff, of animals entering and leaving the facility, ensuring and checking the completion of all associated reports eg Pet Portfolio (history of animal updated daily), Banned Breeds paperwork, and availability of animals for adoption;
- On-going assessment, in conjunction with other staff, of animals within the facility with respect to their health, welfare, general condition and suitability for rehoming. Drawing attention of superiors to animals not considered to be fully healthy or considered to require veterinary attention;
- Regular inspection of all equipment within the facility, with early reporting of any defects or deficiencies found, also responsible for/assisting with stock control of equipment, feeding and cleaning supplies. Ensure the facility and surroundings are maintained in a tidy and presentable standard and secure at all times and contribute to achieving this;
- Instruction of facility staff in liaison with the public visiting the facility. Acting as the first point of contact for public enquiries on animals within the facility and assisting the Manager/ Deputy Manager in the organisation of fundraising and publicity events for the Centre and with visits by schools or other groups.
What we are looking for in you...
- The ability to stay onsite overnight at least once a week to support the management team with providing 24 hour cover of the site
- Experience working with domestic animals, particularly dogs. Good animal handling skills are essential
- Supervisory experience and awareness of health and safety legislation
- Good communication skills and enjoy working as part of a team
- Experience of working with the general public
- Good customer care skills
- Animal Care qualifications are desirable
