- To participate in the specialist activities of the Directorate.
- To participate in ward rounds and, subsequently, ensuring effective management in the in-patient stay.
- To be responsible for the continuing care of patients as designated by consultant staff.
- To participate in new patient and follow-up outpatients clinics.
- To participate in audit within the department.
- To participate in the training of junior medical staff and other staff.
- To deputise for colleagues at an appropriate level.
- To carry out appropriate administrative duties in support of clinical commitments.
- The post holder will be encouraged to pursue research activity.
- The post holder will be expected to participate in regular clinical meetings.

Our specialised services include cancer diagnosis and treatment, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, renal and dialysis services, neonatal intensive care and paediatric intensive care. We are recognised for our particular expertise in trauma, respiratory conditions, spinal surgery, upper gastro-intestinal surgery, complex orthopaedic surgery, laparoscopic surgery and the management of liver conditions. The Trust has some of the most modern operating theatres in Europe. We also have one of the busiest emergency departments in the country, with more than 169,000 patients attending our Accident and Emergency departments in 2017/18.
