The Macdonald-Laurier Institute is a vibrant, growing think tank in Canada’s capital city, where we have already had a major impact on the federal public policy debate. We are seeking a dynamic Grant and Reports Writer to be an integral part of our team. As the Grant and Reports Writer, you will play an integral role in ensuring the Macdonald-Laurier Institute is equipped to influence Canada’s policy landscape. You’ll work closely with the Deputy Manager Director, Editorial and Operations, and work in conjunction with all other staff, and the Managing Director.
The right candidate will be creative, industrious, and have the highest standards for the quality of his or her work. He or she will be extremely comfortable working with tight deadlines and will enjoy the cut and thrust of vigorous debate over national public policy in Canada. The successful candidate must commit to working at our downtown location. Hours are flexible.

Main duties and responsibilities:
· prepare and submit funding proposals, including budgets, in cooperation with program leads;
· draft interim and final reports for donors, in cooperation with program leads, ensuring that all agreed deliverables are accounted for;
· work with Director of Finance to ensure financial reports are prepared and submitted;
· maintain relationships with foundation contacts;
· track and flag relevant dates for new applications and reporting;
· draft applications for awards and other opportunities for recognition for MLI's work;
· work closely with the Manager of Events and the Manager of Communications;
· other duties as required.
Required competencies:
- A bachelor’s degree, BBA, or equivalent with five years proposal/grant writing experience;
- Excels in communicating complex ideas clearly and effectively;
- Understands the unique nature of the think tank world;
- Advanced ability to communicate and interact competently and professionally in a variety of settings, both orally and written (in English);
- Capacity and competency to handle a large volume of work and competing demands/timelines with demonstrated success using organizational and time management skills to ensure project requirements are met;
- Advanced knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and other standard office softwares.
- Ability to anticipate the needs of supervisors, and work independently with minimal supervision;
- Professional, friendly, enthusiastic and respectful;
- Demonstrates a high level of ownership of tasks, accountability and initiative;
- Has an ability to recognize and act on the organization’s priorities;
- Results-orientated with the ability to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities in a small organization;
- Bilingualism is considered an asset; and
- The Institute is strictly non-partisan; working for MLI is incompatible with active membership in any political party.
The Macdonald-Laurier Institute offers a pay and benefits package that is competitive with equivalent positions in Ottawa.
