Duties

Reporting to the technical unit supervisor:

  • Conducts complex diagnostic and/or method improvement analytical procedures in food microbiology.
  • Evaluates, reviews, and interprets analytical data against standards.
  • Troubleshoots, investigates, and solves performance issues with laboratory methods and equipment.
  • Maintains comprehensive records of samples, observations, measurements, and tests conducted.
  • Writes standard operating procedures.
  • Conducts internal audits according to the ISO 17025 quality system of the laboratory.
  • Prioritizes samples for maximum efficiency in meeting turnaround times.
  • Contributes to the laboratory quality assurance system and safety management system.

Intent of the process

The intent is to have an inventory of candidates to draw from when vacancies arise for current and future needs at various CFIA food microbiology laboratories across the country. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis as long as the poster is active.

Employees must be present in the laboratory; remote work is not a possibility.

As we anticipate a large number of applications, we may be applying volume management strategies throughout the selection process.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION

Completion of post-secondary education specializing in a relevant technical or biological science.

Applicants submitting education credentials from a non-Canadian institution are responsible for obtaining certification that these credentials are the equivalent of the Canadian education level required for the position.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE

EE1: Recent* experience in a biological science laboratory.

EE2: Experience operating and maintaining laboratory equipment.

  • Recent experience is defined as experience normally acquired within the last five (5) years.

NOTE: For some positions, experience may have been acquired not only through work but also while studying or volunteering.

OTHER ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Essential qualifications, such as experience, competencies, abilities and knowledge will vary depending on the position being staffed. Essential qualifications will be assessed by the manager prior to an appointment being made.

ASSET EDUCATION

A Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) from a recognized post-secondary institution with an acceptable specialization in microbiology OR related sciences.

Degree equivalency

ASSET EXPERIENCE

AEx1: Experience working in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.

AEx2: Experience interpreting scientific data.

AEx3: Experience performing research, method validation, or method verification activities.

AEx4: Experience following standard methods for the detection or enumeration of microorganisms in foods.

AEx5: Experience using molecular biology platforms for pathogen screening such as VIDAS, BAX or qPCR technology.

AEx6: Experience with MS Office Suite including advanced Excel abilities.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - Applicants who have not lived in Canada for the past five years may be required to submit a police certificate from each country in which they have lived for six months or more during this period, as well as other documentation required for the security screening process. Failure to submit this documentation if requested will eliminate the application from further consideration.

The following conditions of employment are required for an appointment:
  • Adherence to the CFIA Code of Conduct.
  • Adherence to the CFIA Conflict of Interest and Post-Employment Policy.
  • Compliance with the Values and Ethics Code for the Public Sector.
  • Legal status to accept employment for the entire period of employment.
