Job summary
IPSA is an independent body that regulates and administers the business costs and decides the pay and pensions of the 650 elected Members of Parliament and their staff in the UK. In fact, we were the first independent regulator of its kind in any of the world’s democracies.
Our mission is simple: we want to enable MPs to do what really matters by providing an exemplary, seamless regulatory service. We’re guided by our values and our brilliant, inclusive culture ensures we’re not only a great place to work but that we can also constantly adapt, evolve and improve everything we do so that we can meet our customers' needs.

Working at IPSA
Job description
To help us deliver our mission, we’re looking for an Internal Auditor to join our team who is excited by the prospect of undertaking a wide-range of complex and specialist assurance assignments and project reviews to help ensure that IPSA achieve its aim of providing assurance that MPs’ use of taxpayers’ money is well regulated, and that MPs are reimbursed from the public purse only for legitimate costs to support their parliamentary activity.
Together with colleagues in the Audit, Risk and Assurance team you’ll work in accordance with public sector internal audit standards or those of the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors to ensure our work as a team is delivered to a high quality and within suitable timescales and to budget. We’re committed to ‘getting things right first time’ and this role will greatly contribute to that by ensuring IPSA has effective governance, controls, and risk management arrangements.
We believe that robust, but focussed internal audit processes will help us achieve our goal and help us regulate efficiently and effectively. So, we’re looking for someone who can build on our existing frameworks and continue to develop our audit and assurance capability and help us to drive accountability for our brilliant work through robust and regular reporting. IPSA places integrity, transparency and customer service at the heart of what we do, so these are common themes which will run through your work.
The role works across all areas of the organisation. Therefore, this is a brilliant opportunity for an insightful, methodical and curious individual to bring their solid auditor skills to life, working with enthusiastic colleagues and expressive customers to deliver meaningful assurance work to help us continuously improve. The role is key to delivering change and improvement, anticipating risks, and making sure the right data and insight is presented in the right place, to the right people, at the right time to help us continually change.
Initially, this post is being offered on a 15-month fixed-term basis as maternity cover, with the possibility that it may be made permanent due to future organisational changes.
Internal Auditor’s responsibilities include:
- Undertaking and delivering high-quality assurance reviews.
- Working with colleagues across IPSA to deliver reviews to assess compliance.
- Conducting appropriate assurance activity in response to emerging risks and issues.
- Carrying out thorough, detailed investigations, as required and reporting findings.
- Drafting high-quality reports on thematic reviews, including recommendations.
- Contributing to the continuous improvement of operational activity.
- Keeping up to date on statutory and regulatory requirements.
Person specification
We are looking for someone with a demonstrable track record in the audit field so previous experience is essential. Therefore, the ideal candidate will need to have gained a professional qualification in this area (e.g., CIPFA, ACA, ACCA, IIA or CIMA), however, consideration will be given to those who are part qualified. Ideally, you’ll have experience of delivering internal audits and assurance assignments within the public sector.
We are looking for someone who demonstrates dynamism and has strong writing, numerical and analytical skills, including an ability to gather data from a range of sources and analyse and present complex information across all levels of the organisation. You’ll demonstrate brilliant interpersonal skills to effectively deal with internal and external stakeholders and you’ll be adept at multi-tasking and enjoy collaborating with others.
As you’ll be joining a high-performing team, resilience is a key attribute which we will look for, and given the remit of the role, the ability to work dynamically with an unwavering commitment to meeting our own internal deadlines is important.
High initiative and a flexible approach to work and change are important too so you’ll be comfortable working autonomously.
You’ll be joining a diverse and knowledgeable bunch of people, passionate about making IPSA brilliant and so you’ll need to fit right in. Above all, you’ll live and breathe IPSA’s values and be able to demonstrable how your experience and ways of working align with these.
