Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) is one of Canada’s largest and most diversified institutional investment fund managers, with an investment portfolio of [CAD$170 billion (£100 billion)]. Headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, AIMCo manages an investment portfolio for 32 clients consisting of public sector pensions, endowments and government funds. The portfolio is diversified by asset class, with investments in listed equities, fixed income and illiquid investments, which includes real estate, infrastructure and renewable resources, private equity and debt. It employs over 600 professionals and in addition to Edmonton has offices in Toronto, Calgary, London and Luxemburg.
AIMCo’s infrastructure group acquires and manages long-term equity positions in infrastructure assets that have long term stable returns, minimal substitution risk and are either regulated or have highly contracted revenues with potential for long-term capital appreciation. These include utilities, power (generation, transmission, distribution), pipelines, digital infrastructure (fibre, towers, date centres) and toll roads, airports and ports. The group primarily makes direct investments in infrastructure but will also selectively consider externally managed funds.
The current infrastructure portfolio of around [CAN$21bn (£12.8bn)] and includes large investments in Europe including London City Airport, Porterbrook, Constantine Energy Storage, as well as significant transportation and energy businesses across North and South America and Australasia. AIMCo also holds investments in India including the renewable energy platform Virescent. The group is committed to significant growth in its infrastructure programme and seeks to significantly increase the portfolio over the next several years.
AIMCo opened its London office in 2014 which has grown many folds since then. The infrastructure out of the London office is focused on investments in Europe and Asia.
Opportunity
As an Intern in the Investments, Infrastructure & Renewable Resources team, you will support the group in the daily investment activities, operations, analytics, and management of the European & Asian infrastructure portfolio. You will work closely with investment professionals in the group, actively involved across the full life cycle of investments, working with AIMCo colleagues, advisors and other
consortium members to support the origination, transaction and asset management of deals. You will work on financial analysis at the project and portfolio level, monitoring performance of existing investments, undertaking due diligence on new investments and developing models and tools for conducting such analyses. Your attitude, attention to detail, ability to work under pressure, and commitment to excellence in financial modelling, market research, and investment analysis will form the foundation of your contributions to AIMCo.
Responsibilities
- Support the analysis and execution of investment opportunities across a variety of industries and geographies by conducting industry research, competitor assessments, financial statement analysis, and financial modelling
- Conduct market research on different investments being screened or perused in initial or advanced stages respectively
- Develop recommendations and investment analysis and approval materials clearly outlining potential investment opportunities, including expected risks and returns as well as detailed market and asset-level considerations
- Preparing and analysing detailed financial models utilised in investment evaluation, structuring, and financing
- Assess financial returns and identify key risks and value drivers that may impact projected investment returns
- Participate in asset management; monitoring current investments’ financial and operating results and explaining investment plan variances
- Update existing analysis detailing the state of the market for investments held in the portfolio to aid and support senior investment professionals’ understanding of market developments
- Work with global colleagues to assist with value-add initiatives, including research projects, management of portfolio assets, and value creation opportunities
- Support the infrastructure team in any project to improve dissemination and organization of information and other administrative endeavors
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
- Final year or recently graduated from undergraduate or masters courses specializing in Business or Quantitative programs (Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, Accounting, Investment Management) or related programmes would be preferable
- Proven track record of outstanding academic achievement and performance
- Interest in infrastructure and private equity investments
- Able to multitask and manage a variety of projects in a dynamic, team-oriented environment
- Demonstrate high levels of professionalism, along with strong analytical skills
- Attention to detail, well organized and deadline oriented
- Positive attitude, strong work ethic and collaborative
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Applications, specifically Excel and PowerPoint
