Job Title: Band 2 Neuro ICU Health Care Assistant – Adult Critical Care
This busy, expanding ICU/HDU directorate runs across several areas and cares for over 6,500 level 2-3 emergency and elective patients a year. We care for patients who need input from a broad range of specialities, including trauma, cardiac, neuroscience, vascular, general & specialist medicine and surgery, obstetrics, plastic surgery and orthopaedics.
Critical Care has a strong research culture and a team which encourages innovation and clinical excellence.
St Georges Healthcare is a leading NHS Trust employing over 4,000 staff and one of London’s designated Major Trauma Centres. We have several adult Intensive Care Units on the same site and we are rapidly expanding.
Band 2 – Health Care Assistant Role*: To work under the supervision of the qualified nursing staff, the HCA will participate and support the members of the multi-disciplinary team in delivering high quality patient care.

- You must have previous experience (Minimum 1 year) of working preferably in a hospital within the NHS. Successful candidates will have excellent communication skills.
Their main site, St George’s Hospital in Tooting – one of the country’s principal teaching hospitals – is shared with St George’s, University of London, which trains medical students and carries out advanced medical research. St George’s Hospital also hosts the St George’s, University of London and Kingston University Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences,
which is responsible for training a wide range of healthcare professionals from across the region.
As well as acute hospital services, they provide a wide variety of specialist care and a full range of community services to patients of all ages following integration with Community Services Wandsworth in 2010.
St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust serves a population of 1.3 million across southwest London. A large number of services, such as cardiothoracic medicine and surgery, neurosciences and renal transplantation, also cover significant populations from Surrey and Sussex, totalling around 3.5 million people.
The trust also provides care for patients from a larger catchment area in southeast England, for specialties such as complex pelvic trauma. Other services treat patients from all over the country, such as family HIV care and bone marrow transplantation for non-cancer diseases. The trust also provides a nationwide state-of-the-art endoscopy training centre.
(NICU): Neuro Intensive Care: Adult
This friendly, busy 17 bedded unit is the Regional Neuroscience’s Centre for South West Thames. We provide the unique experience of caring for patients with complex neurological conditions including neuromedical, post neurosurgery, stroke and following head, spinal trauma and polytrauma.
This modern unit believes in the development of its staff to provide a high standard of evidence based care for Neuro patients.
1.Job Purpose:
Working under the supervision of the qualified nursing staff, the HCA will participate and support the members of the multi-disciplinary team in delivering high quality patient care.
2.Direct patient care:
2.1 To assist with nursing care as instructed by the nursing staff, including bathing, bed making, assisting with eating and drinking and helping with meals as necessary.
2.2 To assist with the administration of medication under the supervision of a qualified nurse and in line with Trust policy.
2.3 To assist with patient toileting/elimination.
2.4 To care for the patient’s personal clothing, property and valuables in accordance with relevant Trust policies.
2.5 To assist with the moving and handling of patients and loads using the correct moving and handling aids and techniques in accordance with local guidelines and risk assessments.
2.6 To ensure that patient privacy and dignity are respected at all times.2.7 To demonstrate an awareness of the importance of patient confidentiality and ensure a safe and secure environment at all times.
2.8 To perform patient observations e.g. temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration, urine testing, fluid balance charts, height & weight and to record these correctly in the patient’s records, reporting any abnormality or change in these to a qualified nurse.
2.9 To transport, as required, clinical specimens, blood and blood-products as per Trust policy.
2.10 To support and reassure patients during clinical procedures or treatment.
2.11 To escort patients to and from the ward area.
3.Maintenance of the environment:
3.1 To support the housekeeper in the maintenance of a clean environment by ensuring that lockers and the surrounding bed area is cleaned and maintained properly, and that beds are cleaned and re-made when patients are discharged.
3.2 To ensure that all linen is stored, transferred and disposed of correctly within Trust policy.
3.3 To assist the ward team to keep the ward/clinical area tidy, including storage cupboards, sluice, equipment and treatment rooms.
3.4 To assist in the checking, unpacking and storing of items delivered to the clinical area.
3.5 To ensure that all equipment is cleaned after use in line with Trust policy.
3.6 To be aware of, and demonstrate adherence to, the Trust’s policy on infection control and waste disposal. To adhere to the principles of universal precautions in all aspects of patient care.
3.7 To run errands as requested to assist in patient care/smooth running of the clinical area.
3.8 To assist in the delivery of health promotion advice as appropriate to role and in line with own level of competence.
3.9 To liase with the housekeeper and clinical team to ensure that maintenance problems are reported to the Estates maintenance desk promptly.
3.10 To adhere to the recommendations for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and risk assessments appropriate to the clinical area.
4.Customer Service:
4.1 To answer the telephone in a courteous manner and relay both oral and written messages accurately and promptly.4.2 To greet all visitors to the ward courteously and in a professional manner.
4.3 To establish and maintain good relationships with visitors, relatives and staff, helping them to find their way around the clinical or ward environment and hospital site.
4.4 To be punctual at all times.
5.Professional Development:
5.1 To participate in the Trust’s Individual Performance Review process and
demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional development by working towards the objectives agreed within an annual Personal Development Plan.
5.2 To participate in local Clinical Supervision.
5.3 The ‘Certificate in Contributing to the Care Setting: Initial Award’ (City and Guilds) is an award that has been specifically developed for HCAs working in acute care settings and introduces them to the essence of care delivery. All HCAs will be required to participate in the award on their appointment to the Trust.
5.4 All HCAs recruited to the Trust will be required to attend designated Study Days, and complete relevant activities and assessments whilst working towards achieving this award within a culture of life-long learning.
6.General:
6.1 To have responsibility for the health, safety and welfare of self and others, and to comply at all times with the requirements of the Health & Safety regulations.

6.7 To be familiar with the Patient Administration System (PAS) and Electronic Patient Record (EPR) and any other computerised system integral to the running of the ward or clinical area.
6.8 To report all accidents, incidents and complaints as per Trust policy and to participate in their investigation and management.
6.9 To attend annual mandatory training in:
- basic life support
- fire
- manual handling
- Food handling
- Blood products
- Blood glucose monitoring (where appropriate)
