Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
In service of the University’s mission, Digital and Lifelong Learning works with units to support the development of digital programs and pedagogies, as well as other flexible and/or nontraditional learning experiences. We offer a variety of credit and professional (i.e., non-credit) programs through our unit and also provide support for programs across the University. In support of these programs, we provide strategy, coordination, and services to meet program needs, including but not limited to marketing, recruitment, program/course design and development, conference and event planning and support, and student/participant support. Through our programs and services, Digital and Lifelong Learning extends access to education for participants across the state and beyond and enables campus units to expand, share, and collaborate through support for their own research and educational programs.
Position Summary
The Instructional Designer (ID) in Digital and Lifelong Learning (DLL) is responsible for the design and development of online and hybrid educational materials. This position works closely with subject matter experts to map and align educational content to program and course learning objectives, provide input on effective distance-based instructional strategies, serve as an authority on remote teaching and learning best practices, and strategize appropriate learning technology solutions.
This position will also support instructors and University administrators through delivery of trainings related to quality online instruction and provide consultation as needed for instructors, program directors, or academic units. In some cases, this role may have short-term or long-term on-site assignments within a campus unit as an embedded ID. This role is expected to maintain current knowledge of best practices and emerging trends through ongoing professional development, networking, and routine literature review.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to consulting or developing course content, curriculum, instructional technique/technology, distance education design, development or implementation, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Familiarity with online course development using learning management systems (preferably Canvas).
Demonstrated knowledge of design, implementation, and evaluation of distance-based instructional strategies.
Able to work as an independent developer managing the demands of multiple projects and creatively handling resource and time conflicts.
Able to work collaboratively with subject matter experts, program directors, media developers, and programmers to create high-quality online content.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Familiarity with web accessibility standards.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Preferred EdD or PhD in instructional technology, instructional design, or related field. Experience teaching in secondary or post-secondary institutions, preferably online.
Demonstrated expertise in the use instructional design tools such as Storyline, Captivate, etc.
