Job description
This hydrology job is a mix of supporting the Area based Hydrology Service together with providing data, advice and analysis to other national teams. You will get involved with coordinating and building a technically resilient community of Hydrologists within the organisations – through technical meetings and online forums. You will also help manage the various national hydrological datasets that we use.

Following training you are likely to join us in providing data analysis and interpretation at a national level during drought and flood incidents.

This job will be right for you if you are already familiar with the Hydrology Service in Areas and would be interested in getting some experience of the national perspective. Alternatively you may be numerate and interested in how you could apply this to the Hydrology Service.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents, or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
The team
Our team produces the regular national water situation reports, provides data analysis and advice at a national level to support flood and drought management as well as water resources regulation. We also support the Area based Hydrology Service – for example: promoting best practise techniques, running a training programme and developing tools. We are a dispersed team based in different parts of the country – we currently have staff in Reading, Wales and Exeter.
Experience/skills required
An awareness of hydrology is preferable - including a related academic qualification – however an in-depth understanding of Hydrology is not essential if you have other strengths that would be helpful. You should be comfortable working with data.

Training will be provided and we will continue to be available to help with any queries. In fact that whole team is working on a wider approach to transforming data management of which you will be a part so you will be working collaboratively. The team has a weekly 90 minute video call where we update each other on what we’re doing.

We are particularly interested in what additional skills (beyond hydrology) you could bring to the role. Please tell us by giving examples where possible in your competency answers as well as summarising them in the “technical skills section”.
Contact and additional information
We have three vacancies in the team: this permanent Grade 5 post, a 6 month Grade 5 post and a permanent Grade 4 post. If you’re interested in all three posts then please apply for all with separate application forms (you can use the same words for each if you wish); if you are invited to interview you will only need to be interviewed once.

The Environment Agency are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share.

For questions relating to this role, please contact John Waddingham; phone 07760315550; email [email protected]
