South West Councils needs a high calibre person to meet the demands of a changing and challenging programme of work.
This is an exciting opportunity to broaden your experience by providing advice and consultancy support to a wide variety of different organisations who need our assistance in addressing employment issues. Our work is incredibly varied and amongst other things you will conduct complex and/or potentially politically sensitive investigations, advising at grievance/disciplinary/appeal hearings, conducting pay and grading reviews and delivering employment related training.
Although the office base is in Taunton, Somerset, you will be expected to travel throughout the South West and in doing so will get to enjoy this beautiful part of the country. [NB there is also scope for home-based working].
What will you do?
· Provide employment advice on issues such as contract, recruitment, transfer, performance, termination, rewards system consistent with relevant legislation and best practice
· Advise on Local Government conditions and the relevant national agreements as the regional arm of the Employers’ Organisation.
· Carry out consultancy assignments as required in respect of employment matters such as job evaluation, disciplinary or grievance investigations and recruitment.
· Provide training on employment issues either in-house or through the Organisation’s learning opportunities programme.
· Undertake employment research initiatives either in consultation with the Employers’ Organisation or fellow regional bodies.
· Contribute towards income generating activities and other key performance indicators as appropriate.
What skills do you need?
You should have experience of providing employment advice to senior managers and customers, have excellent presentation and negotiating skills, and be capable of working on your own initiative.

SW Councils is a small team of 28 supporting the work of 29 local authorities across the South West and 100+ Associate members (such as police, fire & rescue services, national parks, schools and parish and town councils) . We support local authorities in information sharing and lobbying on behalf of the South West to try and get a better deal for the region, we also support learning and development activity and provide specialist HR advice.
