Begin your NHS career with our Patient Safety Support Worker Development (PSSWD) programme, where you will receive all the training, support, and supervision you need to become a Patient Safety Support Worker (PSSW) / Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW).

We have a unique opportunity to learn on the job at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust over a 6-month paid supervised placement programme. Through our programme, you will learn how to reduce the risk of falls, injury and anxiety for patients suffering from dementia as well as how to maintain positive engagement including diversion and reminiscence therapies.

Work towards your Care Certificate whilst receiving weekly pay, paid annual leave and all the other great benefits NHS Professionals offers our bank members. Once you have successfully completed the programme you will be able to work flexibly at any of our partner Trusts.

Pay Rates:

  • Days: £10.42
  • Saturdays/Nights: £14.69
  • Sunday/Bank Hols: £19.07

Rated ‘Good’ (‘Outstanding’ for Caring) in their most recent CQC report, Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) provides hospital and community-based services across North Yorkshire and Leeds as well as providing children’s services in the North East. What the programme involves…

During our programme you will work through the 15 Standards of the Care Certificate, learning how to meet the daily living needs of your patients as well as being a part of the NHS healthcare team. This includes supporting registered Nurses and other healthcare practitioners in providing patient care, from hygiene to personal and physical comfort.

Main Responsibilities

Typical duties may involve but not limited to:

  • Basic falls management
  • Diversional techniques e.g. use of Dementia Boxes, Twiddlemuffs
  • Reminiscence therapy (photographs, music, memorabilia)
  • One-to-one close supervision of vulnerable patients, who are at risk of falling, and/or present challenging behaviours
  • Carry out clinical procedures/tasks as required
  • Clinical tasks will be determined by the nature of your work and local policy e.g. monitoring the effects of medication.
  • Obtain and test samples and other specimens
  • Clearing and re-stocking consulting rooms
  • Contribute to discharge process
  • Care of wounds
  • Check pain levels and requesting pain relieving medication on patient’s behalf
  • Assist in preparing for clinical procedures and clearing the environment afterwards as appropriate
The Ideal Candidate

Who we are looking for…

For this opportunity, candidates do not need any previous healthcare experience, although any experience in 1-2-1 care is desirable, including familial care.

We are looking for candidates who are/have:

  • Confident in 1-2-1 communication
  • Able to prioritise
  • A positive attitude, with a focused mindset
  • A passion for care
  • The ability to demonstrate the six enduring values that underpin ‘compassion in practice’. The 6Cs are defined as: Care, Compassion, Competence, Communication, Courage, and Commitment.

Please note that we require:

  • You must be over the age of 18 or turning 18 before the planned classroom training week.
  • You work at least 30 hours a week across earlies, lates and nights during the programme. This is a total of 780 hours over 6 months.

What’s next?

  • Attendance of Assessment Day – Planned for 20th July 2023
  • Attendance of FREE classroom training – Planned for 14th - 17th August 2023
  • Attend an Induction week (37.5 hours supervised placement) – Planned for August / September 2023

After the programme

Once you have completed your placement and the Care Certificate 15 Standards, you can work as a PSSW or as a HCSW for the Trust at any of their locations, and at any of our NHS Professionals partner Trusts, through the bank.

As your first step in healthcare with the NHS, this could provide you with the opportunity to progress your career by accessing further training outside of the programme. In time, you could apply to train as an Assistant Practitioner or Nursing Associate, enabling further career avenues such as a Nurse, Podiatrist or Midwife.
