Associated British Ports
Full Time Ipswich, England 25000 - 35000 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

We’re the UK's largest ports operator with a network of 21 ports around Britain. We handle around one quarter of the UK's seaborne trade and contribute £7.5 billion to our economy every year.

It’s a story we’re proud of but it doesn’t end there. We’re transforming our business and embracing the future.

We offer a vast range of roles spanning the UK, all rooted in a culture that welcomes diversity, fosters talent, encourages internal movement and progression, and places safety as our number one priority.

Associated British Ports is the largest Port Operator in the UK. With 21 ports around the country as a company we handle around a quarter of the UK's seabound trade. We view "safety as our licence to operate" which is driven in part by our HS&E teams on a regional level - but starts from day 1 with the company induction, continues through annual training, ongoing cultural measures and a high level of attention to detail ensuring everyone who works on our ports, enters the ports and the surrounding environment is as safe as it can possibly be. This also extends to the Environment and sustainability with our newly launched Sustainability strategy - Ready For Tomorrow.

Our East Anglia region is made up of three ports in Ipswich, Kings Lynn and Lowestoft. We're currently looking to recruit an experienced Health, Safety and Environment Advisor to cover all three ports and ensure that the highest standards are exceeded and any potential issues are managed as quickly and efficiently as possible. You'll hold a NEBOSH certificate (or be close to completing) combined with experience in a similar role. Working in a small team you'll be responsible for supporting a culture that ensures all ABP employees are able to go home safely every day.

Our ports handle a wide range of cargoes and customers including dry bulks, timber products and leisure marina customers. The role needs someone with experience of behavioural HS&E delivery who can influence and coach everybody on site to be aware of any issues that could cause harm. You will need to travel around 2 days a week to the different ports to ensure compliance, manage potential risks, encourage positive behaviours and assist with the delivery of change and project works.

Responsibilities include:

  • Be a Health, Safety and Environment Champion for the local Ports, encouraging effective behaviours and safe working practices amongst the teams.
  • Provide guidance and support to local teams on HS&E matters including relevant ABP policies and procedures.
  • Support with meeting Regional KPIs, including audit closures, Spot It submissions and closures and accident performance.
  • Coach, advise and challenge Managers and Supervisors where appropriate, on HS&E issues in order to help build their knowledge and capability.
  • Promote awareness and support the delivery of Regional safety campaigns within the local Ports.
  • Support local teams with the development and review of relevant HS&E Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work.
  • Deliver monthly Regional HS&E reporting, including positive activities and valuable data and trends.

There is flexibility on which port you'll be based out of and you could potentially work from any of our 3 East Anglia ports. As a company ABP has a strong view on ensuring our colleagues health and safety also extends to their personal lives and as well as access to an 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme, ABP have recently introduced mental health first aiders based around the company providing instant support for any member of staff.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to build positive relationships and influence up to management level (internally and externally).
  • Good level of understanding of HS&E legislation.
  • Experience of managing DSEAR or COMAH environments (desirable).
