Job description
We are seeking a band 2 Heath Care Assistant to join our outpatient clinic In Surgical Pre Operative Assessment Unit based at Southampton General Hospital. You may have previous experience or looking for a career change. Whilst previous experience is desirable it is not essential and we can provide the individualised support and training that is required.
Our team is made up of Health Care Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Anaesthetic and administrative staff. The Clinic opening hours and therefore working days/hours are during Monday to Friday between the hours of 07:45-17:45. The service is currently working additional Saturdays but this is in addition to staff’s contacted hours who are signed up with NHS Professionals. We are a busy service and currently Pre-assess around 10,000 patients per year for multiple surgical specialities.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Welcome patients and their relatives/carers into the department. Ensuring there is effective communication to ensure patients are kept well informed of any delays to their clinic appointment time.
- Assist health care professionals in the treatment and assessment of patients during their outpatient clinic visit by working effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team.
- Independently undertake, record and report patient’s observations – for example weight, height, blood pressure, pulse, oxygen levels and Electrocardiograms (ECGs). Escalate any abnormal results in timely way to the nurse in charge.
- Ensure that correct use of moving & handling equipment, personal protective equipment and personal hygiene standards are maintained, and needs are met within the Trust’s Moving and Handling and Infection prevention Policies
- To rotate working on reception, receiving patients in a calm, courteous and reassuring manner when they arrive for the clinic appointment. Assist with printing, photocopying, cleaning tasks, errands or general duties appropriate to the clinical area as required.
- Previous Health Care Assistant experience desirable but would consider someone who is keen and compassionate without prior experience.
- Good standard of health to cope with the physical demands of hands-on patient care
- Basic school education
- Ability to work a flexible working pattern
- Ability to work cross site at Lymington Hospital on occasions if required
- Previous experience of working as part of a team and ability to communicate with a wide range of people.
