HOURS: 30 hours per week

JOB SUMMARY

  • To work as part of the Nursing Team comprising of Registered Nurses, Healthcare Assistants and Phlebotomists.
  • To work strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the post-holder will be responsible for performing both clinical and non-clinical duties.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To be a safe, competent practitioner and maintain accurate patient records; and
  • To maintain confidentiality and information relevant to patients, their relatives, colleagues and the Practice; and
  • To maintain personal records of continuing education and development; and
  • To maintain professional development by attending course and study days.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To undertake, record and follow guidelines for the clinical and non-clinical tasks for which you have received appropriate training for. These include but are not limited to the following: Ensure all protocols are adhered to;
  • Ensure all stock items are ordered in a timely manner;
  • Support / Cover periods of absenteeism to ensure the Team’s commitment to providing continuing high quality healthcare services is maintained;
  • Undertake training where necessary;
  • Perform ECGs and recording;
  • Perform venepuncture;
  • Assist in Treatment Room clinics;
  • Apply 24 Hr BP Monitors;
  • Check tasks and notifications;
  • Assist in minor operations / coil clinics;
  • Perform Injections incl. B12, seasonal flu, pneumococcal, shingles, and child nasal flu;
  • Ear wax checks
  • New Patient health checks, NHS Health checks
  • Perform urinalysis and preparation of specimens for investigations by the pathology laboratory.
  • To adhere to the recommended guidelines on Infection Control and Health and Safety
  • To liaise with other healthcare professionals
  • To oversee and ensure that all the following: Clinical instruments are appropriately maintained;
  • GP steroid boxes are re-stocked, cleaned and date checked routinely;
  • Stock in clinical rooms is maintained and routinely date checked;
  • Record all Nursing Room fridge temperatures at the beginning of each day, escalate if temperature is outside the acceptable range.
  • To know when to seek guidance from the Lead Practice Nurse, GPs or Practice Manager

  • Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data.

HEALTH AND SAFETY:

The post-holder will implement and lead on a full range of promotion and management of their own and others’ health and safety and infection control as defined in the practice Health & Safety policy, the practice Health & Safety manual, and the practice Infection Control policy and published procedures. This will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines
  • Awareness of national standards of infection control and cleanliness and regulatory / contractual / professional requirements, and good practice guidelines
  • Responsible for the correct and safe management of the specimens’ process including collection, labelling, handling, use of correct and clean containers, storage and transport arrangements.
  • Active observation of current working practices across the team in relation to infection control, cleanliness and related activities, ensuring that procedures are followed and weaknesses / training needs are identified, escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks across clinical and patient process.
  • Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills and initiate and manage the training of others across the full range of infection control and patient processes.
  • Safe management of sharps procedures, including training, use, storage and disposal
  • Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy, clean and sterile and safe way, free from hazards. Initiation of remedial / corrective action where needed or escalation to responsible management.
  • Actively identifying, reporting, and correction of health and safety hazards and infection hazards immediately when recognised
  • Keeping own work areas and general / patient areas generally clean, sterile, identifying issues and hazards / risks in relation to other work areas within the business, and assuming responsibility in the maintenance of general standards of cleanliness across the business in consultation (where appropriate) with other sector managers
  • Routine management of own team / team areas, and maintenance of workspace standards
  • Spillage control procedures, management and training
  • Decontamination control procedures, management and training, and equipment maintenance
  • Maintenance of sterile environments

The post-holder will:

  • Apply practice policies, standards and guidance
  • Discuss with other members of the team how the policies, standards and guidelines will affect own work
  • Participate in audits where appropriate.
