Job description
Purpose
The key purpose of the role is to provide effective coordination of health, safety, and environmental compliance across the organisation, paying attention to the continued development of robust safety and health management systems and procedures, and to address, where identified, areas for improvement.
The role has further responsibility for effectively managing and coordinating the health & safety requirements for Training @ Hopwood, the college’s apprenticeship provision. The postholder will be responsible for developing robust procedures for vetting employer’s suitability for offering employment to college apprentices, managing & monitoring H&S compliance. The post holder will need to develop excellent communication flows with employers, staff and other stakeholders and provide the appropriate level of H&S technical support to the team and employers.
Duties
- Manage and organise the college H&S database, ensuring that all records are maintained accurately, kept up to date and guidance information is suitably reviewed and made available to college personnel.
- Develop & implement procedures and systems for monitoring workplace safety, reporting on accidents and near misses, that help develop intervention strategies and guidance.
- To lead on all investigations regarding workplace accidents; recording & issuing reports for all workplace accidents, injuries, and dangerous occurrences (as identified under RIDDOR).
- To be a primary contributor to the H&S Committee, attending meetings, offering feedback regarding accident statistics and reports to committee membership.
- To develop and maintain a college H&S risk register.
- To coordinate the collation, and undertake an annual review, of all departmental risk assessments, ensuring that all departments are exercising suitable & sufficient safe systems of work and evidencing compliant working practices.
- To undertake health and safety audits of college areas to ensure legal compliance and to prepare corrective action plans where necessary.
- To assist with the creation and review of college written policies, of a H&S nature.
- To provide management and training support, as required, to all college personnel regarding matters of occupational H&S.
- To ensure the college maintains adequate numbers of First Aid and Fire Marshal trained staff, via the organising of external training, with records kept up to date.
- To ensure statutory inspection, testing, and remedial action is undertaken for all workplace equipment & machinery, local exhaust ventilation systems, lifting equipment & pressure systems.
- To assist Corporate Services with the annual review of Fire risk assessments and Asbestos Management Plans.
- To lead on the use of the college’s educational trip booking software (EVOLVE), for the purpose of ensuring all H&S measures are suitably captured and appraised ahead of all offsite activity, ensuring suitable risk assessments and adequate staffing ratios are in place.
- Undertake H&S assessments and Standard 10 assessments in the workplace for medium to high-risk businesses, as requested by the Training @ Hopwood apprenticeship team.
- Undertake documented health checks with employers, monitoring the safety of apprentices and the employer’s legal compliance. Produce corrective action plans where necessary and escalate H&S concerns that place apprentices and learners at risk of significant harm, to management. Make recommendations on the suitability of Apprenticeship placements, through appropriate vetting procedures and workplace monitoring (spot checks).
- Support the Head of Facilities & Risk Management with any administrative duties and functions aimed at promoting occupational H&S improvements.
- To liaise with the college Corporate Services department to ensure a clean and safe working and learning environment for all staff, students, visitors and contractors.
- Participate in training courses and CPD appropriate to the post and Qualifications held.
- To undertake such other duties and responsibilities of an equivalent nature as may be determined from time to time by your line manager (or nominated representative).
