Job description

The role will be supporting the Health, safety, and facilities team to build and engender a culture of health, safety and well-being. Health and Safety Advisor will be supporting the Health, Safety and Facilities Manager in delivering health and safety programmes and targets in accordance with Wandle’s strategic plans and building and maintaining the safety management system.

Specifically, this will involve delivering part of our internal audit programme, developing, and delivering our health and safety training programme, managing the accident and incident reporting process and undertaking investigations where necessary, compiling suitable reports and action plans and engaging with a wide stakeholder group on health and safety management and continuous improvement.


A day in the life:

You will:

  • Undertake planned and ad hoc health and safety audits and inspections of our residential properties, operational sites and work programmes, and report findings back to relevant departments, to ensure that Wandle policies and procedures are consistently implemented and adhered to and to actively promote compliance
  • Participate in quarterly Health & Safety Committee meetings and any sub-committees and task and finish groups to present ideas and proposals, monitor effectiveness of compliance and listen and act upon feedback given
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of programmes of action to address priorities for H & S improvements within the business
  • Manage the organisation’s health and safety e-learning portfolio: develop and deliver the health, safety and fire induction programme and monitor its use and effectiveness
  • Identify and prioritise fire, health and safety learning and development needs, and assist in organising programmes for managers and staff to meet identified needs
  • Monitor the reporting of accidents and near misses and ensure that appropriate systems and guidance is in place to robustly investigate and manage situations
  • Liaising with operational managers and supporting them with any issues that arise within their service areas helping to drive health and safety standards
  • Assist in the monitoring of contractor health and safety and compliance through audit and active monitoring
  • Supporting and providing advice on DSE and office related risks
  • Conduct risk assessments and develop safe systems of work to reduce and manage risks appropriately.
  • Produce clear reports for non-technical and technical audiences, where required. These include Committee reports and ad hoc reports to directors and heads of services as well as drafting communications to promote new training and procedures
  • Provide health and safety advice, guidance, coaching and practical support to managers and staff as requested
  • Manage content on the health and safety intranet site ensuring it is accurate and reflects key health and safety messages
  • Work with the Property/Development, Asset Management and Repairs teams in ensuring compliance and improvement of health and safety policies, procedures and processes in regards construction and maintenance activities such as CDM, fire safety etc
  • Support the health, safety and facilities team to promote Wandle’s work and activities to enhance and develop its reputation and relationships with key stakeholders, partners and influencers
  • Work as part of the wider Business Services and Transformation directorate in partnership with teams across the organisation helping others to achieve their objectives and seeking help in delivering own and team objectives
  • Contribute to the creation and delivery of key internal health and safety messages that align with Wandle’s culture and practices
  • Develop, maintain and obtain buy-in and specific feedback to the safety management system
  • Support the facilities management team, where needed


What you’ll need to have:

Experience, Knowledge, Understanding:

  • of working with staff and managers at all levels on health and safety issues
  • of producing and reviewing health and safety procedures
  • of motivating employees to act safely
  • of designing, delivering and evaluating training
  • of collecting, monitoring and benchmarking health and safety data and undertaking statistical analysis
  • of working with non-technical and technical audiences
  • of risk management processes and investigation
  • of informing, consulting and influencing others

Qualifications & Skills:

  • NEBOSH or NCRQ certificate or equivalent H&S qualification or appropriate membership of a professional institution
  • Graduate level education or qualified through experience
  • Qualification/training/experience in training or learning (minimum: ‘train the trainer’)
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • A confident and articulate spokesperson for the organisation who embodies trust and integrity
  • Exceptional communications skills, both written and verbal with the ability to write coherent reports
  • Clarity, accuracy and close attention to record keeping
  • A capacity to research and to remain informed of contemporary developments in health and safety
  • Ability to work independently in accordance with agreed targets and objectives
