Job description

The Head of Professional Education, Apprenticeships and Careers position (HoPE) is an exciting, stimulating and varied role leading on the design, delivery and evaluation of innovative and research-led professional education and workforce development.

The post-holder will develop and maintain strong, productive working relationships across our Trust and with our many ICS and education partners, being a visible, accessible and authoritative presence. The post-holder will lead on Preceptorship, Clinical Skills, Student Placements, Development Opportunities, Apprenticeships and TNA’s amongst other education and development initiatives.

Integration of Simulation Based Education into Non-Medical education and development is also integral to this role, along with developing new and exciting opportunities to widen participation to education and development.

  • Lead the implementation and evaluation of Education solutions and initiatives for the Trust, in line with national policy and the long-term plan, GHT and ICS People and OD strategic corporate objectives.
  • Design, deliver and evaluate departmental activity that supports the GHFT Operational Plan, Trust Strategic Objectives and aligns to the continuing transformation of GHFT and its services.
  • Deliver the in-year education and development priorities as appropriate to role and agreed with the Associate Director of Education Learning, and Culture. This includes a lead role on developing new roles/projects to attract and retain students (RePAIR), and colleagues (Trainee Nursing Associates, Assistant Practitioners, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, Chief Nurse Fellowship).
  • Work with the Chief Nurse and wider Education and Development team and Trust leaders to lead on the development of career pathways for our non-medical workforce from apprenticeships to post-registration, ensuring a pipeline for our future workforce that particularly targets our workforce shortages and gaps.
  • Contribute to the development of a learning organisation and Best Care for Everyone through appropriate Education and Development interventions that enable safety, compassionate care and personal and organisation growth.

Key Dimensions

The post holder will lead the service comprising part-time, full-time, permanent and short-term contracts in a range of roles including Professional Education Practitioners, Practice Education Facilitators, Trainers, administrators and apprenticeship/work experience leads (approx. 25 team members).

Key Relationships and Communication

Head of Professional Education, Apprenticeships and Careers is required to: -

  • Develop highly motivated, skilled and engaged teams committed to delivering best care for everyone and positioned to succeed in the ever changing educational and healthcare landscape.
  • Communicate complex messages effectively and productively with a range of staff at all levels in the Trust up to Board and Non-Executive Director level as well as with our partnering organisations in health and education. This includes a wide range of methods to communicate including business cases/reports, formal presentations to large numbers of people and more intense one to one interactions.
  • Build and maintain positive and productive relationships both in the achievement of objectives and as an educational lead/advisor for Divisional Directors, Senior Clinical leaders/managers at all levels in the Trust.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with Higher and Further Education Institutions, NHS England Workforce, Training & Education Directorate, Professional bodies such as NMC and HCPC, accreditation award bodies and other education/training or apprenticeship providers.
  • Build and sustain successful working relationships with colleagues in other Health Care agencies to foster a strong ethos of partnership working and support the achievement of Gloucestershire’s Strategic (Sustainability) Transformation Plan.
  • Build strong networks with other Professional Education professionals in Health Education England – South West.

  • Maximise the opportunities presented through the Apprenticeship Levy to increase the numbers, range and quality of apprenticeships – at all levels in our Trust, leading on the required procurement of apprenticeship providers in line with the NHS Standard Financial Instructions.
  • Liaise with HEIs, FEIs, Apprenticeship providers, NHS England Workforce, Training and Education, and GHFT leads to provide high quality practice placements for our student workforce, increasing these in line with local ambitions to recruit more adult nurses.
  • Engage and collaborate with other local organisations, NHSE WT&E, One Gloucestershire ICS and other relevant regional and national teams to develop Education and Development strategies within the health community and deliver the Long Term Plan.
  • Play an active and positive role to the decision-making and service development committees/steering groups in GHFT, the ICS and Region.
  • Contribute to GHFT/NHSE WT&E/ICS reporting and recording processes through Board/Committee papers and regular data returns.
  • Lead the education and training needs analysis and delivery for Trustwide projects
  • Ensure the continual improvement of the professional education & the Education, Learning & Development service through the research, introduction, development and evaluation of service delivery processes and methods.
