Job description
We are looking for a Research Technician to join our team and provide administrative, technical and experimental support to the lab of Dr Becky Greenaway (greenawaylab.com) at the Department of Chemistry, Imperial College London. Research in the Greenaway lab focuses on high-throughput automation for the synthesis of molecular organic materials and supramolecular assemblies, including non-conventional porous phases such as liquids and melt-quenched glasses. The position, funded by a Royal Society Enhancement Award, will primarily involve working closely with Dr Greenaway to help with the day-to-day running of the lab, optimising procedures, and carrying out high-throughput experiments for large-scale data curation.
Duties and responsibilities
As a Research Technician, you will play a vital role in the daily organisation and management of the lab, supporting the operational needs of the Greenaway Group and facilitating the research activities carried out in the lab, and carry out crucial high-throughput experiments as part of an ongoing collaborative project. The split between administrative, technical and experimental duties and responsibilities is expected to be relatively even.
From an administrative and technical perspective, this will include:
- Placing and managing orders, and resolving issues with suppliers
- Assisting with quotes and the procurement process
- Keeping track of and monitoring spend on cost centres
- Ensuring the lab is an orderly space and co-ordinating the lab rota
- Managing the lab inventories and chemical storage
- Ensuring group data is archived correctly and routinely
You will actively contribute to the research and the development of existing experimental and collaborative projects within the group, which will involve:
- Preparing stock solutions and running our established high-throughput workflow for data curation
- Preparing samples and carrying out sorption measurements
- Assisting with 3D-printing and prototyping of custom labware
- Communicating with group members and our collaborators
While specific training will be provided, a foundational understanding of chemistry and common techniques would be advantageous.
Essential requirements
You should hold a degree in Chemistry or related scientific discipline, with direct practical experience of laboratory work desirable, ideally within a chemistry wet lab. Experience in the day-to-day management of a lab, standard techniques including preparation of stock solutions, and maintaining and calibrating equipment, are essential.
Experience with operation and maintenance of any of the following equipment would be desirable: vacuum pumps of varying designs, rotary evaporators and recirculating chillers, automated flash column chromatography systems, automated liquid handling platforms, robotic platforms, sorption and surface area analysers, optical microscopes and temperature stages, and 3D printers. Experience with pressurised gas systems and a basic knowledge of Python would also be desirable.
Familiarity with Health and Safety procedures and regulations is essential, with recognised qualifications (e.g. IOSH, NEBOSH accredited courses) advantageous.
Further information
The position is full time and fixed term for 11 months, based at White City Campus. The expected start date is in November 2023.
Please note maximum salary on appointment is £37,977 per annum.
