Responsibilities and Duties
Our award winning Toronto animation studio is looking for a senior level 3D Background/Environment Designer for a very cool and unique 2D/3D animation project. Content is true crime inspired, graphic and violent in nature. The design style of the show is based on existing individuals and there is a strong sense of realism to the show design. Animators will interact directly with the animation director, leads, and producers.
Key Responsibilities
- Create backgrounds/environments in Maya as required for use by various departments within the 2D/3D animation pipeline.
- Conceptualize and design high-quality 3D backgrounds and environments that align with the artistic vision and style of the project.
- Collaborate with the director and other team members to understand project requirements, including mood, atmosphere, and visual references, and translate them into stunning 3D environments.
- Create and integrate detailed 3D models of landscapes, buildings, props, and other elements required for the backgrounds/environments, ensuring accuracy, realism, and aesthetic appeal.
- Set up and adjust lighting systems to achieve highly stylized cinematic lighting across the board, including desired ambiance and mood within the backgrounds/environments, considering factors such as time of day, weather conditions, and overall narrative.
- Ensure that all designs are production friendly and can be used within scenes.
- Adhere to the production guidelines regarding file types and sizes.
Key Requirements
- 3+ years of previous experience as a 3D Background/Environment Designer or similar role, with a strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in creating realistic and visually appealing 3D environments. Must have experience on an animated series or film.
- Proficiency in Maya.
- Considerable knowledge of render engines such as V-Ray, Redshift, or Octane Render is an asset.
- Solid understanding of design principles, composition, perspective, and colour theory, with the ability to translate concepts into compelling visual storytelling.
- Strong knowledge of texturing techniques, material creation, and shader networks to achieve realistic and visually engaging backgrounds/environments.
- Familiarity with lighting techniques, including global illumination and HDR environments, to create atmospheric and immersive scenes.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality work within designated timeframes. Strong time-management skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours if and when necessary with tight deadlines.
- A great attitude and work ethic. Able to work & communicate efficiently in a motivated milestone-driven, team environment.
- Project is graphic and violent. Strong stomachs needed, and those not easily offended.
