Graphic Designer
Office of the Chief Administrative Officer - CUPE Local 157
Summary of Duties:
The Graphic Designer conceptualizes, plans and produces print and electronic media within established City branding standards while continuing to expand the brand identity of the Corporation. The graphic designer researches and develops design solutions for external and internal audiences. Design includes but not limited to brochures, posters, flyers, business cards, web banners, book-lets, outdoor signage, invites, ads (news and web), stickers, name cards, meeting collateral, branding and logo development.
Duties and Responsibilities

- Create, produce and deliver effective creative and original visual material through computer-assisted creative design or free-hand, from concept to print-ready format, or in the case of digital assets from concept to publishing, including photo editing, typography and layouts.
- Ensure visual communications materials maintain the corporate brand and message consistency as well as guide and monitor various internal and external stakeholders on the corporate brand identity.
- Collaborate with City staff, internal and external marketing strategists, writers, photographers, videographers, programmers, web editors and printers/print operators to deliver projects from design to finished product.
- Ensure all illustrations/photographs used are free of copyright infringement and have copyright clearance.
- Receive, prepare and process print and reproduction requisitions and requisitions of graphic supplies including special media and photographic services ensuring proper prioritization.
- Maintain electronic document management of jobs, graphics and artwork, images and fonts; maintain stock image/graphic accounts (Shutterstock or similar.)
- Participate in the selection of new software, products and services and equipment.
- Liaise with service providers for work which cannot be performed in-house. Provide production requirements including specifications and instructions and prepare forms to ensure payment of completed work.
- Prepare charge backs and customer billings on a monthly basis.
- Provide training and direction to student workers ensuring quality of work produced.
- Perform other similar and related duties as required.
Position Requirements:
- College Diploma (two (2) year) in Graphic Design, Web Design, Visual Arts, Communications or Marketing.
- Demonstrated ability to be creative, original, intuitive, perceptive and think visually in response to customer need to ensure designs are fresh, original and appealing.
- Advanced computer skills with demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Pro and current graphic design programs, including Adobe Creative Suite.
- Knowledge and understanding of: o Web content management, HTML, CSS, Dreamweaver. o Typographic design in print and digital media. o Copyright and infringement law/policies. o The City's obligations under the Information and Communications Standards of the Accessibility for Ontarian with Disabilities Act. o Art and design theories, concepts and practices and ability to use in complex situations. o Resolution, colour, pre-press and print output.
- Effective time management skills with the ability to prioritize and organize work to meet deadlines and multi-task with minimal supervision.
- Proven customer service and communication skills with the ability to work in a team environment and liaison with key internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work under conditions of strict confidentiality.
- A demonstrated commitment to enhancing a safety culture.
- Proven completion of Ministry of Labour Worker Health and Safety Awareness training.
- Valid Ontario Driver’s license, Class “G”, with a clean driving record.
CUPE Pay Group 7 – Minimum $55,759 annually; Maximum $61,942 annually
*2021 rates (2022 & 2023 adjustments TBD)
Expected Work Location: City Hall (eligible for part-time remote work)
Hours of Work: Currently Monday – Friday; 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM
