Brand & Graphic Designer - Communications
The mission of the Allen Institute is to unlock the complexities of bioscience and advance our knowledge to improve human health. The mission of the Allen Institute Administration team is to provide support and structure to the scientific divisions. Coinciding with the team science approach, Administration helps facilitate team learning and the overall mission of the Institute.
The Communications Team is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Designer to create a variety of beautiful and effective visual assets that both celebrate and bring the Allen Institute brand to life. The Designer will also provide creative services to internal stakeholders for their graphic design needs. The ideal candidate not only creates artistic and engaging designs, but is collaborative with all levels of the organization, highly organized, and deadline driven.

Essential Functions
- Manage and enhance Allen Institute’s visual brand identity, including all templates and assets, ensuring a consistent coordinated look, feel and design across the organization, but also concept and introduce new and reimagined design schemas
- Create and develop printed collateral including handouts, pamphlets, signage, and tradeshow booth displays
- Develop digital brand assets such as signage, banner ads, infographics, advertisements, and titles and graphics for video
- Collaborate with researchers, scientific teams, and the Education & Engagement team to develop graphical representations and illustrations of complex scientific concepts
- Design cover artwork for research publications in scientific journals
- Develop design concepts, themes, and deliverables for internal and external events
- Collaborate with the Editorial and Media Team on WordPress webpage design, layout, editing, creation of new templates as necessary, and placement of multimedia assets
- Maintain and manage creative queue of projects from start to finish, including meetings with stakeholders to understand their needs/goals, offering design expertise and advice, taking creative direction, and creation of the final product
- Manage production of printed materials, including sourcing vendors and cost estimates, attend press checks, approve proofs, etc.
- Assist in maintaining and organizing digital asset library in Adobe CC, Dropbox, and Vimeo

Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in graphic design, or equivalent combination of degree and experience
- 3 years’ experience in graphic design
- Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
Preferred Education and Experience
- 5-7 years’ experience in graphic design
- Masters in Fine Arts (MFA) degree preferred
- Experience in an institutional, non-profit or agency environment is preferred
- Basic knowledge of HTML and HTML5 desired
- Experience with WordPress preferred
- Illustration and digital animation experience a plus
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate with people at all levels of the organization and from a wide variety of backgrounds
- Ability to take creative direction, both written and verbal from stakeholders and apply to create the best possible product that upholds Allen Institute brand standards
- Meticulous attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and ability to manage projects and vendors
- Sense of urgency, and self-motivation, including the ability to follow through to complete tasks independently
Physical Demands
- Occasional lifting up to 30 pounds
- Standing and sitting for extended periods of time
- Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment
- Push/pull up to 50 lbs. (pushing a cart)
- Stooping, bending, crouching, and reaching
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
- This role is currently working in a hybrid work environment. We are a Washington State employer, and the primary work location for all Allen Institute employees is 615 Westlake Ave N.; any remote work must be performed in Washington State.
Annualized Salary Range
- $65,510 - $96,082*
- Final salary depends on the required education for the role, experience, level of skills relevant to the role, and work location, where applicable.
