You will work on a combination of project execution and delivery, and business development activities for both new and existing clients within the waste management, industrial and renewables.
The role is based in Edinburgh, but working with other process engineers in the other SLR offices is common practice. In addition, there are opportunities to support SLR’s other regions across the world.
Our Engineering service line has expertise across a range of engineering disciplines, including civil, geotechnical, chemical, process, materials, and mechanical engineering, with particular expertise in solid waste management/treatment, renewable energy, and industrial wastewater treatment. The Process Engineering team provides clients with expertise at all project stages, including:
- Overall Project and Programme Management;
- Plant Operation, Maintenance and Trouble Shooting;
- Options Assessments and Concept Design;
- Technical and Economic Feasibility Studies;
- Plant Commissioning and Performance Testing;
- Detailed Design and Performance Reviews;
- Process Design Review and Optimisation;
- HAZOP/HAZID Studies;
- Development and Preparation of Technical Specifications;
- Preparation of Tender Packages and Tender Evaluation;
- Technical Training and Instruction (Plant Operators and Managers); and
- Technical Advisor and Independent Certifier Roles.
The role
The successful candidate will work as a consultant in our process engineering team. You will be expected to work independently and within a team to deliver a variety of projects. Your work will be a mixture of site-based and office/home based work, including:
- On-site inspection, witnessing, verification & supervision of construction, commissioning, and testing projects and troubleshooting of operational plant, including waste and recycling operations (thermal, mechanical, biological) and other renewable energy and sustainability-based projects;
- Assisting with the review of third-party designs, technical proposals and operational models and writing of reports for funders;
- Preparing technical documentation and schematics/drawings and assisting with the management of contracts through SLR’s Owner’s Engineer role in plant construction projects;
- Assisting with the preparation of spreadsheet-based models to determine plant energy and mass balances, emission rates and financial/operational models, including thermodynamic calculations and basic financial metrics; and
- Assisting other teams within SLR with technical and process engineering aspects of diverse projects.
You will work with others in the process engineering team and other disciplines across the business including the Advisory, Environmental Management and Compliance, Land and Water and Environmental Specialist Services Groups on a wide variety of different projects.

About you
You will have a minimum 2.1 degree in process, chemical, electrical or mechanical engineering and you may also have work experience in the power or waste management industry, or consultancy.
You should also have:
- Knowledge in recycling, waste treatment and/or renewable energy
- Experience in thermodynamic calculations and generating mass and energy balances
- Knowledge of Health and Safety at work and Process Safety
- Excellent report writing skills, with an understanding of the importance of presentation, accuracy and attention to detail in maintaining our professional reputation
More generally, we also need you to:
- Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, allowing you to be a positive and professional representative of SLR
- Be IT literate, particularly with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Be numerate and confident with data
- Be willing to learn and develop and undertake ongoing continuous professional development and have a desire to achieve Chartered status
- Be able to demonstrate you can work independently and are organised and a logical thinker
