Contract Type: Permanent, Full Time
Closing Date: 29 June 2023
This role is subject to -
- Qualification: 2:1 degree in any discipline
Manchester is looking for its future leaders.
We want to support two talented, passionate graduates to complete their CIPFA professional qualification, to develop and progress through our Financial Management Service, launch a rewarding career in Local Government Finance, and become our city’s future senior managers and leaders.
Our unique Management Trainee Scheme will give you a structured programme of placements in Financial Management across the city’s different services to develop the skills and build the experience you will need to complete the required portfolio and get your professional qualification in the bag.
Working for Manchester brings you exciting chances you simply don’t get elsewhere:
- £1billion capital programme
- Net budget of £730million a year
- Testing and reviewing investment options, like recently:
- prospects for the city’s own solar farm
- a heat network across major city centre buildings
- city-owned housing development of 500 new homes a year
- multi-million-pound care market interventions protecting vulnerable people.
This role is no walk in the park. Fourteen years of cuts and austerity have stretched our budgets, services, residents and local economy close to the limits. The pandemic has added to the pressures but Manchester has bucked trends and is continuing to grow.
That’s because we attract staff who can think differently, who listen to and work with our residents – and each other –with profound understanding and compassion, and who aren’t afraid to try new things to get us where we aim to be.
Are you ready to make a long-term commitment to working for Manchester City Council, helping us to tackle our complex and diverse challenges, and to provide the support, challenge, training, insight and intelligence our services need to make the best of our budgets for the benefit of our residents?
In return we’ll support and develop you in all aspects of the financial management service and to do this you will require an insight and understanding of all the services that we deliver and procure, to enable you to become everything you want to be.
About the Candidate
You’ll need to be a high-performing, enthusiastic graduate – in any discipline – who is adaptable, resourceful and determined to turn your talents, and our investment in you, into a better future for Manchester and its residents.
Successful graduates will need to work effectively, in partnership, with people at all levels from a variety of disciplines, aspire to become future leaders, be prepared to challenge the status quo to bring about change, be able to learn and share knowledge and experiences, have resilience and show dedication to making our city and our residents the best that they can be.
About Us
We’re the local government authority for Manchester, and have teams across the city helping to make this a great place to live for everyone. We’re proud to do local government differently, in a city with an international reputation for diversity, creativity, culture and passion.
When you join us, you’re joining a team of over 7,000 council staff helping to make our ambition for Manchester a reality. Whatever your role, you’ll be supporting our residents and communities to be the best they can be, and helping to build a Manchester that's fairer for everyone who lives, works, volunteers, studies or plays here.
To make our ambition a reality, every person we recruit needs to play their its part. It takes a certain type of behaviour, attitude and way of working to get Manchester where it wants to be. Our people and partners have agreed five ‘behaviours’ – the grounding for how we must work together and treat one another:
- We take time to listen and understand
- We work together and trust each other
- We show that we value our differences and treat each other fairly
- We ‘own it’ and we’re not afraid to try new things
- We’re proud and passionate about Manchester
A career with us means you can be yourself, thrive, and build the career your talent and ambition deserve.
