Job Title - Healthcare Assistant
Reports to - Lead Nurse
Date: January 2023
Main Purpose of the Role:
To assist the GPs and practice nurse team in the service and delivery of care to the practice population.
Work collaboratively within the general practice team to meet the needs of patients and support the delivery of policy and procedures.
Main Duties
Undertake record and follow guidelines for tasks:
- Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions
- Urinalysis and preparation of specimens for investigation by the pathology laboratory
Measuring and recording following physiological measurements in routine presentations:
- Blood pressure
- Pulse rate and rhythm
- Temperature
- Height and weight – body mass index
- Venepuncture
- ECG
- Smoking Cessation
- Physical Health Checks
- Assisting with minor surgery and coil fitting
- Assist in raising awareness of health and well – being
- Flu vaccinations / B12
- Wound care/dressings
Communication:
- Demonstrate sensitive communication styles to ensure patients are fully informed and consent to treatment
- Communicate effectively with patients and carers, recognising the need for alternative methods of communication to overcome different levels of understanding, cultural background and preferred ways of communicating.
- Anticipate barriers to communication and take action to improve communication.
Delivering a quality service:
- Produce accurate, contemporaneous and complete records of patient consultation, consistent with legislation, policies and procedures.
- Prioritise, organise and manage own workload in a manner that maintains and promotes quality.
- Participate in the maintenance of quality governance systems and processes across the practice.
- Collaborate on improving the quality of health care in partnership with other clinical teams
- Evaluate the patients’ response to health care provision and the effectiveness of care.
- Support and participate in shared learning across the practice and wider organisation.
- Understand and apply legal policy that supports the identification of vulnerable children and adults, being aware of statutory child/vulnerable adult health procedure and local guidance.
Health, safety and security:
- Use the personal security systems within the practice according to practice guidelines.
Use appropriate infection control procedures and maintain work areas so that they are clean, safe and free from hazards reporting any potential risks identified, including:
- Handwashing
- Collection and handling of laboratory specimens
- Decontamination of instruments and clinical equipment
- Reporting of sharp injuries
- Dealing with blood and body fluid spillages
- Understanding and apply the principles of the cold chain
- Know the general principles of first aid and resuscitation to be able to undertaken initial actions as appropriate
- Know the health and safety policies and procedures within the workplace
- Be able to identify the risks to health of microbiological and chemical hazards within the work place according to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health

- Understand own role and scope, and identify how this may develop over time
- Work as an effective and responsible team member, supporting others and exploring the mechanisms to develop new ways of working

It is not essential that the person appointed has NHS experience; Good customer service skills plus an ability to work methodically with a keen eye for detail and good IT skills is more important

Skills, Abilities NVQ Level 3 Experience of SystmOne
& Competencies
Understanding of the needs of the patient and the role of the HCA – ability to work with high patient turnover
Customer care skills – working within a care environment and be able to deal tactfully and empathetically with distressed or anxious patients and carers
Clinical skills e.g. phlebotomy, wound care, flu vaccinations
IT Literate including Outlook, Word and Excel
Excellent Communication skills(verbal and written) – being able to deal with members of the public
Organisational Skills – effective time management and being able to self-manage
Ability to handle simple medical equipment e.g. ECG Machine
Attention to detail – maintaining accurate records as required
Working with confidential, sensitive information
Keen to progress and develop new skills

Salary: £11.00-£12.50 per hour
