Salary: £ 71,047
Closing date: Thursday, 28 September 2023
Contract type: Fixed Term Contract (c.12 months / End date: Dec.24)
The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy, and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.
We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.
These challenges need the bold science we support, but they won’t be solved by science alone.
We are looking for a Global Government Relations Lead to join our team for a c. 12 months’ contract (end date Dec.2024).
Where in Wellcome will I be working?
You will be working as part of a broader Government Relations and Strategic Partnerships (GRSP) team within the Strategy division, reporting to the Head of Global Government Relations.
This is a really exciting year to be joining GRSP; this role will work with governments and policymakers. You will get the opportunity to test out your political analysis and thinking, bringing insights from the external environment and policy developments to shape our thinking internally. You will be asked to build relationships internationally so we can achieve change on our health challenges and promote the role of science in solving them. You will also support the team thinking about Wellcome’s presence at global moments and international fora and how to influence governments through these processes.
You will work closely with the Policy and Corporate Affairs teams to deliver coordinated political engagement and outreach. Our key stakeholders include governments and public bodies, multilateral organisations, civil society, academia and research institutions.
What will I be doing?
This role will work closely with the Head of Global Government Relations to lead, plan, execute and manage Wellcome’s partnerships with governments across the world to advocate for positive change in health, science and research. You will form a core part of the team advising and formulating strategies for Wellcome to deliver on our advocacy goals in infectious disease, mental health, climate and health, and discovery research, through building our external relationships with political stakeholders, policymakers, multilateral organisations, and other relevant partners. This role will have exposure to senior people within Wellcome as well as external (i.e. Government and high profile individuals) and you will be required to travel from time to time.
As a Global Government Relations Lead, you will:
- Devise and oversee delivery of ambitious government relations strategies and programmes of work for Wellcome, that create an enabling environment within governments, in which Wellcome’s policy goals can thrive.
- Drive and motivate project teams to deliver these government engagement programmes, including managing the work of government relations professionals in these teams.
- Make a strong personal contribution to delivery as the senior member of the project team and providing advice to Wellcome senior colleagues and provide a single senior contact and co-ordination point for colleagues requiring advice and support in their Lead country, or countries.
- Build a strong senior network of relationships with governments that maximises Wellcome’s influence in science and health policy development around the world (for example, in ministries of health, development, foreign affairs, and finance).
- Deputise for the Head of Global Government Relations as appropriate, including giving speeches, participating in panel discussions, giving print/ broadcast interviews (and off-the-record briefings) as required and work closely with the wider Government Relations and Strategic Partnerships team, as well as Policy and Corporate Affairs colleagues to deliver advocacy strategies that influence key political stakeholders.
- Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.
Is this job for me?
We are looking for someone with lots of enthusiasm, an interest in international affairs and politics, good political judgment, and a passion to achieve change through influencing.
