Game Master Sheffield, England
Job description
*Please note, the schedule and working hours for this position are casual. Expect hours most Saturdays between 1pm and 6pm, even more during peak time of Oct-Feb, but they aren't guaranteed till a few days before. This applies both ways, employees can choose not to work when we ask, we may negotiate an "on call" or "last minute" bonus to sweeten the deal! We think that's fair :).*
*Please note #2, any applications that don't tell us a permanent (or term time) address won't be considered, it's important we know how far you're traveling to get here*
*Please note #3, we have a friendly dog on site most of the time, so dog allergies and grievances aren't going to work*
Job Description
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our team as a game master at The Lockup Escape Rooms. Escape rooms are leisure activities in which a group of friends, family or colleagues enter a room full of puzzles and mysteries to solve in order to ‘escape the room’.
Game masters are responsible for ensuring our customers are in a positive mindset on arrival, receive a quality experience on site, and leave happy and likely to return. A game master’s role can be divided into four responsibilities:
- The briefing: Greeting customers on arrival, informing them of the facilities, delivering a safety briefing as well as the theme of the experience.
- In-game support: Monitoring progression of the game and providing hints to customers in succinct and differentiated manner.
- The debriefing: Congratulating or consoling groups on their win or failure. Highlighting successes in all groups, ensuring they leave with a positive frame of mind, regardless of their outcome.
- The reset: Resetting the room, sanitising it, reporting any breakages and missing items so it is ready for the next group.
You will receive full training and direction on how to complete your duties effectively, but you will be required to absorb yourself into the mechanics of the experiences, delivering the briefing unprompted, what clues to give and when and how to reset the rooms correctly, every time.
Person specification
The ideal candidate will have some kind of background in customer service, and be able to demonstrate that they can be warm, welcoming and personable in front of groups of people. They will have to deal with all manner of issues presented by the customer, as well as recognise times when the customer feels they haven’t received good value for their money and what to do to remedy that.
Game masters are required to think on their feet, anticipate issues and be proactive about resolving them before they have an effect on the customer experience, often independently. The required candidate will have to demonstrate the ability to use initiative in difficult situations to lessen the impact when things go wrong.
Though not required for the position, we will have preference for any candidates that can show experience and skills in social media marketing, game design, IT and electronics, media/graphic design and web development. We want to know what skills you can bring to our small business, even if it is just a hobby!
This position would suit a student wanting to work part-time accompanying their studies.
About us
The Lockup Escape Rooms was founded in early 2018 with a vision to create absorbing and unique escape room experiences that don’t compromise on the customer experience. Every minute of every customer’s time spent on site should be engaging, where this is not met, we strive to remedy regardless of time or money.
This vision has led to us being the number 1 ranked escape room on google reviews with a near-perfect score of 4.9 and a loyal customer base that recognise us for quality experiences.
Since reopening after the pandemic lockdowns, we have only three team members; One game master who has been with us for 2 years, owner Liam and his doggo, Hovis (insta @hovis_the_corgi). We look forward to adding another member soon!
Recruitment timeline (subject to change)
The position will be closed to applications at 1pm on Sunday 1st October. This is to give the many students of Sheffield an opportunity to apply when they arrive for their studies. There won't be a "best time to apply" for this, if you apply, I'll read it. If you prefer, you can email your CV to [email protected], but don't apply via more than one method, that just adds to the admin and will make me grumpy.
I hope to have contacted potential interviewees within a week after that. If you haven't heard from me by Friday 6th Oct, assume your application was unsuccessful. If you do meet me for an interview, and I recruit someone else, I won't leave you hanging and will let you know straight away once a decision has been made.
I tend to interview in a cafe somewhere nearby the city centre, I'll buy you a coffee and expect me to bring the dog. I hope to make the appointment early to mid October, ready for our busy period.
