Job description

Job Purpose
To design, develop, implement and maintain business applications that operate across the administrative, teaching and research functions of the University in accordance with University objectives. To deliver solutions which maximise service quality and efficiency and meet service standards and requirements.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Gather, analyse and document business requirements and use these to develop appropriate technical solutions.
2. Collaborate with designers and back-end developers to develop and maintain intuitive, user-friendly, and responsive user interfaces, following technical standards, and ensuring at all stages that the solutions delivered meet user requirements and expectations.
3. Create detailed design specifications and technical documentation following standard templates.
4. Test features robustly and continuously to ensure quality is maintained, including functional, cross-browser/device compatibility, performance, accessibility and usability testing.
5. Work with colleagues to provide information and input to user and help guides and deliver user training and familiarisation sessions.
6. Provide system support, monitoring systems to ensure satisfactory availability and performance. Provide third line user support to a high standard of customer service at all times, resolving day-to-day problems which could originate from technical problems or business related issues.
7. Ensure compliance with University policies and IT Services technical working procedures and professional standards.
8. Plan daily workload in line with work schedules agreed by the team, providing estimates of technical work where required; share updates at daily stand ups and manage tasks using tracking software.
9. Apply the principles of security by design, adhering to security policies and running security tests according to established working procedures.
10. Ensure continued familiarisation with new technologies and keep skills up-to-date
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills through personal development and progression in a similar related role(s) Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, 10 or 11 (Ordinary/Honours Degree, Post Graduate Qualification), or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.
A2 Substantial knowledge of front-end web application development: HTML, CSS, Javascript.
A3 Substantial knowledge of front-end libraries/frameworks: jQuery, Node js, Vue, Angular, Bootstrap.
A4 Knowledge of development tools: code repositories, IDEs, design tools (e.g.Figma), continuous integration (e.g. Jenkins).
A5 Knowledge of analysis and design methodologies (e.g. UX analysis, user-centred design, responsive design).
A6 Strong knowledge of browser compatibility issues.
A7 Good working knowledge of digital accessibility requirements including WCAG standard
A8 Knowledge of security technologies e.g. TLS
A9 Knowledge of Agile working practices.
Desirable:
B1 An understanding of working with back-end application servers to interact with business rules and data.
B2 Some knowledge of evolving customer experience technologies e.g. AI, virtual assistants.
B3 An understanding of FOI and DPA legislation.
B4 Working knowledge of Java and related technologies, such as Spring Framework, Junit.

Essential:
C1 Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to investigate and devise technical solutions to a range of problems to facilitate learning, teaching and support services
C2 Ability to acquire complex technical knowledge in a rapid and ever-changing environment
C3 Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
C4 Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to form effective relationships and work well with others in a cross-functional team environment
C5 Self-motivated, displaying initiative and enthusiasm
Experience
Essential:
E1 Substantial experience of the full systems development lifecycle including requirements analysis and application design, development and testing
E2 A track record of using HTML CSS, and JavaScript to create functional, responsive, and visually appealing apps, websites or applications.
Desirable:
F1 Experience working in an Agile project team environment
F2 Experience of working with UX designers and translating UX designs into code
F3 Experience of mobile app development
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £38,474 - £43,155 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended.
