We are seeking an enthusiastic, positive, and confident Flood Risk Consultant to join our established team based in our Stoke-on-Trent office.

The Role

This exciting role will offer the successful candidate the opportunity to join a team of experienced Engineers and Environmental Scientists to work on varied Flood Risk, Surface Water, Drainage and Infrastructure Projects for Private Sector Clients, Water Companies and Local Authorities. Our project-base is varied including residential developments, renewable energy schemes, commercial and industrial development, education and healthcare, and large-scale infrastructure projects to name a few.

This will involve developing skills and experience in flood risk assessment, surface water design, Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS), flood risk management and flood investigation among others. You will work to support the delivery of flood risk projects by working closely with, and under the supervision of, a team of specialists to prepare technical assessments, designs and reports covering all project phases from pre-planning/feasibility stage through to detailed design and construction.

The responsibilities of this role will include;

· Visiting and inspecting sites proposed for development and/or at risk from flooding and conducting appropriate surveys, tests, and assessments.

· Investigating and assessing flood risk from any source using existing data, hydrological and hydraulic theories, calculations, and computational models.

· Assessing options and preparing designs for flood risk mitigation in accordance with industry guidance.

· Preparing surface water management plans and Sustainable Drainage designs from conceptual stage through to detailed design using industry standard software.

· Preparing foul drainage strategies and outline designs using industry standard software.

· Undertaking hydrological assessments using Flood Estimation Handbook, WINFAP, ReFH2 etc.

· Using GIS software (QGIS, MapInfo, ArcGIS etc.) and analysing datasets (Excel etc.).

· Completing feasibility and pre-planning assessments.

· Writing flood risk assessments, surface water management plans, flood risk management plans and Flood Risk chapters to support Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs).

· Establishing and maintaining good working relationships with clients and colleagues both internally and externally and working co-operatively across all disciplines to deliver joint projects, share information and ideas.

· Working closely with senior staff to enable delivery of the wider teams workload within programme and budget.

The candidate for this role should be motivated to gain their professional qualification within a few years and be enthusiastic of their discipline. They will enjoy analysing problems with excellent attention to detail and demonstrate a proactive and methodical approach to finding solutions. The ideal candidate will also have a willingness to own their own workload and be driven to improve their technical skills and enhance their career.

Essential Criteria

· Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Geography (with a Physical base) or related discipline.

· Good grades at A-Levels (or equivalent) in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) subjects and/or Geography.

· High standard of written English and proficient with the use of Microsoft Office suite including Excel and Word.

· Experience of working within a team, able to demonstrate good communication skills (verbal and written).

· Understanding of hydrological and hydraulic principles and their practical application in the water environment.

· Have good interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to work independently.

· Full UK Driving License.

Desirable Criteria

· Experienced in the use of AutoCAD and GIS software (QGIS, ArcGIS, or MapInfo).

· Experience in the use of MicroDrainage, Flow or other drainage design software.

  • Knowledge/awareness of hydraulic modelling software packages (such as Flood Modeller, Tuflow, Hec-RAS), and/or hydrological software packages (such as FEH and ReFH2).

· Graduate Member of CIWEM or other relevant Institution with an ambition to work towards gaining chartership in this field.

· Experience in the preparation of technical reports and drawings.

· Holds CSCS Card.
