Job description
Applications are invited for a Fisheries Research Assistant to support our programmes of fisheries data collection, research and consultancy services. The role will be varied in nature and with a strong practical element. You will need to be highly motivated, collaborative team player, with a keen eye for detail and accuracy. You will need to communicate effectively with Fisheries Scientists, the wider department, and to foster excellent relations with industry stakeholders and research partners.
The role will require you to undertake biological and fisheries data collection and sampling at fish markets, processors and in our laboratories, with some out-of-hours work and some day-trips on both commercial (mainly shellfish) and UHI-Shetland vessels. Training in biological sampling and data entry will be provided. There will be opportunities to develop your role as a researcher within new and existing projects and consultancy.
The successful candidate will hold either a degree in a relevant area, such as marine biology or ecology, or will have a working experience of the fishing industry and a desire to be involved in the practical work that supports scientific research.
