Main Purpose

We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join a premier team of Firefighters at the 421 Air

Base Group, Royal Air Force Menwith Hill, United Kingdom.

The 421 Air Base Group is looking to recruit a Firefighter to serve as a HAZMAT firefighter/basic life support assigned to a
crew engaged in structural firefighting and rescue operations; driving and operating firefighting vehicles of significant
complexity; and to assist in reducing and/or eliminating potential fire hazards to protect persons, property, or the
environment, and performing non-invasive emergency medical procedures.
As a Firefighter, they will perform basic life support, drive and operate a variety of firefighting vehicles. Furthermore, they
will also perform structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities, which may include large multistoried buildings,
industrial areas, and/or base storage facilities. In addition, they will also maintain firefighting equipment and fire station
facilities, as well as complying with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and performing work in a

manner that enhances the safety of the work environment.

Knowledge and Experience Required
Applicants must demonstrate the following:

1. Knowledge of basic and specialized structural firefighting equipment (fire alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.), techniques, and procedures; and of basic and specialized building design, construction, and occupancy.
2. Knowledge of hazardous materials emergency response procedures, equipment, identification, and mitigation actions.
3. Knowledge of basic life support techniques and protocols. Knowledge of emergency first aid techniques; and safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and/or technical orders.
4. Skill in operating communications equipment.
5. Ability to maintain good working relations; to communicate orally and in writing; and to lift and carry heavy loads.
6. Ability to conduct complete HAZMAT incident analysis; and to apply emergency first aid techniques

  • Hours of work: Start & end times may be modified due to mission needs and in accordance with organization’s flexible working policies.
  • Will be required to handle and safeguard sensitive information in accordance with applicable US and UK laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.
  • May be assigned other duties that are appropriate to the grade and skill set of the employee.
  • May be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft in the performance of official duties or attend necessary training. Position may be coded as mission essential.
  • A 12-month probationary period will be required.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • May be required to travel overnight to US or other countries in the performance of official duties or attend necessary train.

Employee must participate in a mandatory physical fitness program.
Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management.
This position is considered operational; therefore, the incumbent is entitled to receive an Operational Firefighter
Pay Supplement for working an approved USAFE ‘as rostered’ shift pattern which may include weekends and public holidays.
May be subject to recall.
Employee may be subject to random drug testing.
This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.
Work will require driving a motor vehicle. A valid CAT C driving licence is required.
Position requires the ability to discern colors, contract, and depth.
May be required to participate on Hazardous Materials Teams (HAZMAT).
Member is subject to work the Emergency Communications Center (ECC).
May be required to perform duties associated with the operation of aircraft arresting barrier equipment.
May be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft in the performance of official duties or attend. necessary training.
There is a mandatory retirement age of 60 years for firefighters hired under the Local National Direct Hire
Program.
Employee is required to be certified by the Department of Defense (DoD) Firefighter Certification System as
Firefighter II (includes Firefighter I), HAZMAT Awareness, HAZMAT Operations, and Hazmat Technician within
18 months of being appointed to the position. In addition will be required to be certified to the Telecommunicator
I/II, Rescue Technician level after initial certification listed above. Will attend any other formal and/or correspondence courses as required and determined by guidelines and the Fire Chief. Failure to complete the required certifications within the 18-month period due to employee negligence will result in separation from the position.
