An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Finance Director to support the CEO, Trustees/Directors and staff in delivering outstanding services, for Age UK Barnsley.

Contract: Permanent

Hours: Part Time 15-18 hours, working hours/days to be agreed

Salary: Depending on qualifications and experience.

From £41,470 - £49,990 pro-rata

Location: Queens Road, Barnsley

Our Finance Director will be an advisor to the CEO and Board of Trustees, so budget preparation, reporting and forecasting as well as monitoring and advising on financial controls and policies to ensure compliance will be key.

Having executive responsibility to lead the finance function, there will also be liaison with any potential outsourcing of our finance functions and our managers. You should therefore be an effective communicator with the ability to build relationships and influence people at all levels. You will possess excellent financial skills, including the ability to produce accurate quality financial information and interpret and present information for non-financial managers.

This is a key role offering an excellent opportunity for the right person to lend their expertise in determining the future of our payroll service, developing and embedding our new finance function and in embracing new technologies as they arise.

JOB DESCRIPTION

FINANCE DIRECTOR

Job purpose: To be the Strategic Lead for the Charity’s Finance Function

Accountable to: Chief Executive Officer

Responsible for: Finance Manager

Location: Queens Road, Barnsley

Hours: 15 – 18 Hours per week, Flexible between Mon – Fri 9am – 4pm

Main Duties:

  • Act as Finance Advisor to the Chief Executive and the Board of Trustees
  • Provide and interpret financial information and produce accurate financial reports to specific deadlines
  • Review financial data and monthly management accounts, and quarterly cash flow forecasts predicting future trends
  • Work with the Chief Executive Officer, Management Team, and Board of Trustees to develop and formulate strategic and long-term business plans
  • Work with the Chief Executive Officer to prepare the annual budget. Work with colleagues and budget holders to review performance and ensure the Charity is operating efficiently
  • Manage budgets, prepare, and supervise monthly accruals, prepayments and other accounting entries, and ensure the delivery of day-to-day financial operations such as payroll, invoicing and other transactions.
  • Research and report of factors influencing the charity’s performance to identify areas for potential growth, improvement, and cost reduction opportunities
  • Sit as a member of the Finance Sub Committee providing strategic input
  • Lead and manage the production of the audited accounts in collaboration with the charity’s auditors in time for presentation to the Board of Trustees and Annual General Meeting.
  • Supervise, motivate, and lead a staff team
  • Keep abreast of changes in financial regulations and legislation
  • Drive continuous improvement of financial understanding within the wider charity team
  • Stay up to date with technological advances and accounting software (SAGE currently being used)
  • Establish and maintain financial policies and procedures for the company
  • Any other tasks, commensurate with the position, as assigned by Chief Executive or Board

RELATIONSHIPS

  • Work closely with the Chief Executive and Treasurer
  • Build and maintain good relationships with the Management Team and other colleagues
  • Develop external relationships with appropriate contacts, eg auditors, solicitors, bankers and statutory organisations such as HMRC
  • Develop and maintain good client relations as appropriate

GENERAL

  • Comply with the organisations Health and Safety and other relevant Policies and procedures
  • Comply with the Data Protection Policy and guidelines for staff and volunteers
  • Represent the organisation professionally at meetings, conferences, and events where appropriate
  • To assist and take part in the Charity’s profile raising and charitable events
  • Work alongside colleagues to ensure full compliance with quality standards
  • Undertake any other such duties as are reasonably appropriate to the post and be prepared to formally take responsibility and leadership of other roles within the charity if required.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

FINANCE DIRECTOR

Education/Training

  • Fully qualified accountant eg ACA, ACCA, SIMA

Knowledge and experience

Essential:

  • Strong post-qualification experience in working in a similar role
  • Excellent working knowledge of computerised finance & other systems, including Microsoft office, payroll & accounting packages
  • Demonstrable experience of managing finance and payroll
  • Experience in the development of budgets, working with financial procedures and drafting financial policy
  • Good knowledge and experience of Charity Accounting SORP, taxation and other statutory regulations and reporting requirements/returns
  • Knowledge of financial controls, charity and company law in relation to statutory accounts and reporting
  • Experience of banking procedures and cash handling
  • Experience of dealing with stakeholders

Skills and abilities

  • Ability to use experience and judgement to provide sound advice to the Board, and colleagues, sometimes in the absence of complete information
  • Excellent financial skills, including the ability to produce accurate quality financial information and interpret and present information for non-financial managers
  • Proficient in MS Excel
  • Excellent interpersonal skills through written and verbal communication
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to handle competing priorities and meet deadlines effectively
  • Ability to problem solve, work positively with others to deliver results
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others, management and leading improvement projects
  • Ability to take ownership and be resilient to cope with the demands of the role
