Bat Field Technicians
Pay Rate: $27/hour, 7 to 10 hours per day
Work Term: June 26 – Aug 4, 2023 with possibility of extension
Job Description:
The BC Conservation Foundation is looking for two field technicians to be part of our bat team that will based in Revelstoke for the duration of the work. Crew housing will be provided on site, but relocation costs to Revelstoke would be the responsibility of the successful applicants.
The successful applicants will conduct fieldwork within the southern interior of British Columbia. Fieldwork includes mistnet capture of bats in a forested/wetland environment, radio-tracking bats to roosts, habitat plots, and surveying bridges for bat use and guano collection.
Duties will involve travel to and from field sites around the general areas of Revelstoke, west to Kamloops, and south and east to the BC border. Technicians will assist with bat capture, tracking, collecting habitat data, data entry, and sample management.
Responsibilities
The technicians will:
- Be prepared to work in the field for shifts of five days (5 on 2 off) up to ten continuous days in length (10 on 4 off). Some fieldwork will involve overnight travel, including camping in remote areas and hotel accommodation, while other weeks will just require day trips from Revelstoke. Overtime work may be required.
- Assist with bat capture, radio-tracking, and assessing bridges for use by bats
- Follow all decontamination and safety protocols around bats capture and handling and bridge surveys
- Download data and photos daily or at the end of field visits (when camping), and maintain data and samples in an organized manner.
- Work independently and with minimal supervision.
- Work as an efficient team with a fellow crew member in a productive, efficient, and professional manner.
- Be physically fit and prepared to work a 7 to 10 hour field day in all weather conditions, spending most of your time outdoors, sometimes hiking long distances within steep, hilly terrain and not on designated trails.
- Be comfortable working with others at night in habitats used by bears and biting insects.
- Be comfortable driving on highways and working under bridges to do bridge surveys. A vehicle will be supplied for travel to the field sites.
Qualifications and skills required:
- Proof of rabies vaccination and acceptable titre levels in the last 6 months OR confirmation of rabies vaccinations in progress, with no bat handling to occur prior to 3 weeks post-vaccination
- Post-secondary education majoring in a field of environmental sciences.
- Past field experience is required.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and problem solve with minimal supervision.
- Valid Class 5 BC drivers’ license and willing to provide a driver’s abstract.
- Competent in operating, managing, and downloading data from GPS units and digital cameras
- Experience mist-netting and radio-tracking.
- Must be able to collect and record field data according to given BC Government standards.
- Microsoft Office computer skills are required.
- Plant identification skill.
- Knowledge of bats, forestry, and plants of BC will be considered strong assets.
