Vacancy: Festival Events Assistant

We are looking for an enthusiastic person who loves music and public events, to work at our Festival this year.

Saltash Songs & Shanties Festival is a non-profit event, launched by Salt
Arts CIC in 2022 to bring live music to historic venues around Saltash. We are aiming to create a Festival that is a fantastic annual live music event, reaching people across Saltash and beyond and establishing the town firmly in the Cornish music scene. We are doing this by:

  • Presenting performances by professional musicians who have links to, or perform music inspired by the local environment, culture and heritage.
  • Establishing an inspiring platform to showcase the town’s wealth of amateur music groups.
  • Creating opportunities for everyone to make music through workshops and joining in sessions for all ages.
  • Unleashing the potential of the town’s many historic venues and bringing them into use as spaces for live arts.

About this role

Pay: £14 per hour (likely to be 45-50hrs in total).

This is a freelance position.

The Events Assistant will support the Festival Director in ensuring the smooth and safe running of all our public events in venues across Saltash. This will involve the following activities:

  • Being available to work at all the dates, times and locations outlined below.
  • Meeting and greeting artists and audiences.
  • Helping artists to set up for rehearsals and events.
  • Helping to set up venues for events and clearing up after events.
  • Selling tickets and refreshments.
  • Managing audiences entering and leaving venues.
  • Distributing publicity material.
  • Stewarding during events.
  • Collecting evaluation and feedback from audience members.
  • Transporting equipment between venues (appropriate trolley will be provided).
  • Being a proactive promotor of the Festival, in person and on social media.
  • Plus, other tasks required to deliver the Festival.

The following is from our draft schedule and may be subject to minor amendments.

12-16 June: 7.5 hrs across these days – training on systems and familiarisation with venues.

Sunday 18 June: 2.30-10pm (7.5 hrs) Livewire

Wednesday 21 June: 6-10pm (4 hrs) Isambard House

Thursday 22 June: 6-8.15pm (2.25 hrs) Saltash Leisure Centre

Friday 23 June: 9.45am-12noon (2.25 hrs) Saltash Library c.7-10pm (3 hrs) Isambard House

Saturday 24 June: 10.30am-1pm (2.5 hrs) Mary Newman’s Cottage
1-9.30pm (8.5 hrs) St Nicholas & St Faith Church

Sunday 25 June: 12.30-5pm (4.5 hrs) Isambard House and Waterfront
6-10pm (4 hrs) Saltash Social Club

Person Specification

Saltash Songs & Shanties Festival aims to reach and include people from across our community and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds.

You will need to:

  • Love live music.
  • Be minimum aged 21.
  • Be confident working with the public and enjoy being in a public facing role in the Saltash community.
  • Have excellent face-to-face communications skills and be welcoming and enthusiastic.
  • Think on your feet when faced with unexpected questions or circumstances.
  • Be aware of event health and safety protocols and maintain these at all times.
  • Be aware of audience/artist access needs and provide appropriate support when required.
  • Be methodical at following instructions, schedules and task lists.

It would be useful if you had prior experience in the following areas:

  • Public facing roles in hospitality, retail, events or similar.
  • Working at events (either public or business).

Qualifications:

  • Maths and English GCSE grade C or above, or equivalent.
  • 1st Aid at work useful but not essential.

No other specific qualifications are required for this role.
