Job description
About Us
About:Energy was founded to accelerate the transition to electrification. We provide battery data for better decision-making across the value chain, from mine to end-of-life, helping companies reduce costs and timelines to bring innovations to market. About:Energy is a deep-tech company that maximises impact on the battery industry through our end-to-end software platform, The Voltt. Leveraging upon A:E’s core parameterisation and modelling IP, The Voltt enhances design decisions around battery technologies, including materials, cells, systems, and operational use.
The Role
Are you studying for a STEM degree? Wondering what career to pursue? Interested in finding out more about the battery sector? Keen to spend time with a dynamic community of pioneering battery researchers seeking to find solutions to support a fully electric future? The Faraday Institution is offering 55 internships for undergraduate students to spend 8 weeks working on battery-related projects.
During the FUSE internship, you will be able to attend Faraday Institution cohort events which will focus on various topics to develop further your understanding of career opportunities in the battery sector. At the end of the programme, you will be invited to share a poster about your work, and prizes will be awarded.
Topic: Better battery model quality by estimating experimental error (supervised by Edmund Dickinson)
Project Details
At About:Energy, we test and tear down Li-ion cells to develop battery models for industry, aiding engineers who use batteries in the products they design. When delivering parameters and models to customers, the expression of our confidence in our measured data is critical to our scientific credibility. This project will enhance our model quality by developing mathematical ‘uncertainty budgets’, estimating experimental error contributions in our measurements on lithium-ion batteries and their materials.
This project is desk-based, not lab-based (but has an experimental topic), and will require a mathematically competent student. Some familiarity with mathematical software or programming would be beneficial but is non-essential. Full training will be provided. The internship will be conducted onsite at About:Energy’s offices and labs (Camden and/or South Kensington, London).
Internship Learning Objectives
- Responsibility for a commercially relevant scientific project in the battery industry
- Understanding scientific uncertainty and how it is estimated for lab processes
- Developing practical skills for scientific data analysis, collation and reporting
- Interpreting technical data and equipment specifications
- Establishing confidence in liaison between technical staff
- Communication of scientific results to a technical team
- Making informed scientific judgements in a commercial environment
Student eligibility criteria - Applicants must:
- Be a registered full-time undergraduate student at a UK university.
- Undertake the internship within the years of their undergraduate study (i.e., not in final year or during a subsequent Masters’ programme).
- Not have been a FUSE intern in a previous year
Our Principles
- Care: Empathise with the customer. Customer success is paramount, our software is built to solve their pain points, and our sales process is seamless and transparent.
- Craft: Never stop learning. Finding solutions to problems that have never been solved requires continual development. Take courses, go to conferences, and meet people!
- Teamwork: Find canvases for others to paint on. Winning is about everyone’s success, not just our own.
- Truth: Be upfront and candid. Honesty is essential, be critical of each other in a supportive manner, communicate key business decisions across the organisation, and let each other know what isn’t working.
- Initiative: Don't wait to ask. No one has all the answers, everyone is trusted with a particular role because they are the best. Take action, make mistakes, repeat.
- Fun: Have fun. We spend more time at work than anywhere else. Let’s make it challenging and exciting.
Housekeeping
- Dates: Up to 8 weeks between 1 June 2023 and 30 September 2023
- Salary range: London real living wage £11.95 / hour
- Flexible working: London office (Camden and/or South Kensington, London), hybrid work option available
- Benefits: Pension scheme with 3% contribution, 33 days holiday per year including bank holidays, company socials.
- Closing date: March 17, 2023
- Any offer of employment will be subject to the successful candidate holding the right to work in the UK.
