Trainee Import/Export Operator

Close to Burrfields, Portsmouth
£14,000.00-16,000.00 dependent on experience, Monday-Friday 8:30am-5pm, 37.5 hours a week
Ziegler UK Ltd is part of The Ziegler Group, a large freight forwarding organisation employing some 3200 people across the EU, Scandinavia, The Far East, North America and North Africa.
You will experience training in all aspects of freight forwarding to/from the EU and world-wide to include Road-freight, Sea-freight and Air-freight. The role also includes general office upkeep such as filing, good housekeeping and other duties.
We operate a number of driver accompanied trailers from this site, so there will be some involvement in communication/operational aspects of this.
We have a strong commercial approach to our work, which includes limited marketing and some sales. Training will be given in this area. It is important you develop a commercial awareness with regards to both our Customers and suppliers.
There are 10 staff at the Portsmouth office. So many individuals have experience and step in when others are on holiday. It’s important therefore that you learn as many aspects of our business as possible.

Qualifications
GCSE 9-4/A*-C in English and maths or Functional Skills Level 2 in both, proof of certificates is required
Due to the demands of the role, applications with less than the required grades will not be considered. Equally, applications received without stating GCSE maths and English/Functional Skills/equivalent results will not be considered.
The employer would like a minimum of GCSE 9-4/A*-C in three other subjects, one if these being French. If you do not have these grades please still apply and we can discuss. Ziegler have regular communication with French companies, with two French speakers in the office it would be useful to have a third.
What does the programme include?
The Apprenticeship will focus on Business Administration and includes the following knowledge criteria:
- Understanding the organisational purpose, activities, aims, values, vision for the future and resources
- Knows the organisational structure and demonstrates understanding of the benefits, knows their role in the team and recognises how their skills will help them progress
- Understands Laws, regulations and internal policies all related to their sector
- Understands relevant external factors (policy change, supply chain, national/global markets, employment)
- Business Fundamentals – managing change, business finances and project management
What attendance is required?
Attendance at College will be required on weekly on Wednesdays 9am-12pm. Time spent training will come under the working hours per week. Your assessor will liaise with you to set up mutually convenient times for consultation and assessment visits at your place of work.
It is a Government requirement for you to spend 20% of your apprenticeship working towards your “Off the Job Learning” – off the job learning can consist of college attendance, coursework, project related work, employer training, mentoring and coaching.
Learning and assessment
Apprentices build a portfolio of work and work place assessors will be in regular contact to provide support, and to arrange on-site visits to observe the apprentices’ ability and skills in their daily role. It is important for the apprentice to take ownership of their own learning by seeking out opportunities to gain new skills on the job with the employer. The apprentice’s final grade will be determined by collective performance in the three assessments in the endpoint assessment. To achieve a pass or distinction the apprentice will need to score60%-79% (pass), 80%+ (Distinction).
The three assessments are:
- Online Knowledge Based 50 multiple choice questions - 60 minutes (33.3%)
- Portfolio Based Interview – 30-45 minutes (33.3%)
- Project Improvement Presentation 20-30 minutes (33.3%)
Future prospects
Upon successful completion of the Apprenticeship, and subject to progress as an employee, Ziegler would like to offer you a full time job. We will give career progression to anyone who is creative, works hard, has or develops excellent communication skills, develops well within the team at Portsmouth office and can develop commercial skills (with training) to help improve the profitability of the Branch.
