The role

Our new strategy to 2030 aims to firmly establish Bristol among the world’s top 50 great research-intensive universities, and the top 10 in the UK.

Our plans are ambitious and we're looking for a leader who can own and shape the institutional agenda for communications and marketing and keep decision making firmly centred on delivery of our strategic priorities.

You'll be overseeing a large team through a transformational period as we look to embed a modern and future proofed operating model for marketing and communications, focused on realising the benefits of our ongoing digital strategy. As such, the role leans towards applicants with real strength in the digital marketing domain.

There are some key workstreams that you’ll be accountable for:

  • Enhancing our digital experience - leading the University through our web transformation
  • Developing our brand – locally and internationally, both corporate and employer propositions
  • Talent planning – establishing the future skills needs for a reimagined operating model

This is a role that requires an exceptional listener – someone who can remain on the pulse of internal and external narratives. You’ll keep us one step ahead of emerging challenges, providing sound judgement and expertise to senior leadership and trustees with reputation and purpose front of mind. Success will be grounded in smart upwards and downwards management and trusted relationships at the most senior level.

What will you be doing?

As an active member of the University Senior Management Team, you’ll:

  • Provide oversight and strategic direction to the Division, managing successful delivery through your management team
  • Develop and lead a high performing function that models best practice and provides outstanding service delivery to a wide and varied range of customers
  • Strengthen staff engagement and buy in to the University’s vision and strategic priorities through curation of intelligent internal comms strategies
  • Ensure effective collaboration with the University’s student recruitment and admissions teams to support achievement of student number targets
  • Develop a compelling brand position that supports the strategic priorities of the University across education, research and student experience
  • Create Intelligent approaches to horizon scanning and external networking to ensure marketing activity is agile to emerging political, economic and demographic developments

  • Significant experience of a senior role in PR, internal or external communications at a university or other large, complex organisation
  • You’ve a track record of successful delivery while being responsible for strategy, resources, budgets and planning
  • Extensive senior level experience heading up the design and curation of clear brand led communications, for varied audiences across multiple mediums and channels
  • You can articulate and evidence your approach to strategic planning
  • Experience of providing expertise, advice and briefing to senior leaders in response to emerging issues
  • You’ve strength and experience in developing digitally led marketing and communications solutions
  • Proven ability to network and influence at a senior level within an organisation
