We are recruiting for a part-time Library Assistant to join our evening and weekend team. The Taylor Institution Library is one of the University of Oxford’s principal research libraries. It is the centre for the study of modern and medieval European languages and literatures, together with linguistics, world cinema, and women’s studies. The Taylorian is part of Section 3 of the Humanities Libraries and you are likely to provide cover at the other two Section 3 libraries from time to time (Art, Archaeology and Ancient World Library and Nizami Ganjavi Library) or other Bodleian Humanities Libraries in an emergency.
As a Library Assistant you will be part of our Reader Services team. Your duties will include staffing the Enquiry and Issue Desks, assisting readers and working with both the University’s online library catalogue, SOLO, and the automated library management system. You will also fetch and re-shelve books, relegate books to the Collections Storage Facility at Swindon and process stock.
You will have a strong customer focus and the ability to communicate effectively, confidently and courteously, as well as to undertake routine library tasks with care and accuracy. You will have the ability to work effectively as part of a team and to prioritise work under pressure in a busy library environment.
The role involves lifting, carrying and shelving books, climbing ladders above 2m (occasionally) and pushing trolleys.

This is a part-time, permanent post, working 12.13 hours per week averaged over two weeks, to a fixed fortnightly pattern, as follows:
  • Week A: Mon, Thu & Fri evenings (16:00-19:15)
  • Week B: Mon & Fri evenings (16:00-19:15) + Saturday (09:45-18:15 – includes 30 min unpaid lunch break).
