YOU will serve as the critical first point of contact in the Development Service Center (DSC) to issue permits to contractors, residents, and business owners for building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work as well as yard sales.
Minimum Requirements:
- Requires a high school diploma, GED or specialized vocational training.
- Requires one (1) year of front facing customer service experience requiring the resolution of challenging customer issues or equivalent experience in public safety/codes or the building and construction business.
- Preferred to have work experience in and knowledge of one or more of the following areas: building construction; building construction conceptual and administrative processes; building, fire or housing inspections; plumbing, electrical or mechanical trades; or, fire protection, elevator or property maintenance work.
- Any combination of successful education and experience that confers equivalent knowledge and ability, including high school technical training programs or college engineering, architecture, or construction degree programs, may serve to satisfy this requirement.
- Requires certification as a Permit Technician, issued by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (VDHCD), within 18 months of employment.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
- Must successfully pass a criminal background check related to this position prior to an offer of employment or promotion.
Additional Requirements
- May require working non-standard hours including evenings and weekends.
- The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergencies or at the direction of the City Manager, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
